We are motivated to fight against this beast that's taken my husband and my father-in-law! I don't want to lose anyone else to Brain Cancer!
We were just normal people, living normal lives, until my father-in-law (who lived with us) was diagnosed with Brain Cancer in 2013. We quickly found that it's a brutal disease that has the potential to rob a person of their mobility, cognitive abilities, independence and ultimately dignity. He eventually passed away in 2015. He was sorely missed, but we picked up the pieces of our household and kept moving forward. Until my husband’s 48th birthday in 2017, when my husband was diagnosed with Glioblastoma.
We couldn't believe that we were facing the same nightmare roller coaster again. We held out hope for a miracle even though his median survival rate was 15 months. He participated in all the treatment options available but the tumors were more advanced than the treatments. We had an amazing team of doctors and nurses who were more like family. The brutal nature of the GBM beast dictated that we ultimately had to say goodbye to him in September of 2018.
He inspired many with his strength and positive attitude. My teenage children have now lost their father and grandfather to brain cancer within 4 years. We again move forward but nothing will ever be the same. We can have a pity party or we can use our pain to fuel us to try to make a difference so that families don't face this same nightmare in the future!
This June 27th would have been our 27th wedding anniversary. July 3rd would have been his 51st birthday. We've been robbed of a future with our loved ones.
We support the National Brain Tumor Society in raising awareness of Brain Tumors and the need for a cure. Throughout our ordeals, NBTS has been a valuable resource in learning about what we were facing. We turned to them to learn about terminology, standard of care, treatment options, networking with other patients and caregivers at regional events and learning about what to expect every step of the way.
