I was diagnosed with two brain tumors in the fall of 2007. This is my 10th year walking with Race for Hope in support to find a cure for brain tumors.

We walk in honor of many Friends, Survivors. In honor of Ava Conklin and in memory of our heros, Hunter Dean Scott, Caray Keen, William Edwards and many others.
I began particing in Race for Hope since 2009 in honor of Hunter Dean Scott. In June 2008 Hunter was diagnosed with a Supratentorial PNET brain tumor. After a 3 year battle against cancer, Hunter became our angel on July 2, 2011. This year, we walk in his memory, this year he walks with us in spirit.
Ava Claire is a bright, funny, charming big sister who adores soccer, reading, and acting and singing on stage. She was seemingly healthy until she started developing headaches and vomiting, primarily in the mornings. On October 20, 2011, Ava was diagnosed with a brain tumor. We rushed to the hospital and were quickly admitted, as the tumor was almost completely blocking the third ventricle in her brain. By October 24, she had endured an 11-hour, complicated brain surgery. On October 31, she developed a rare case of meningitis in her CSF fluid, and was put into a medically induced coma for 10 days. Unfortunately, she had a series of mini-strokes from the infection. She awoke from her coma unable to swallow, talk, walk or move at all. Fortunately, she could breathe on her own, smile, and communicate through blinking. She's spent time living in an in-patient rehabilitation hospital and was there until the end of February 2012. She slept through her birthday, and was hospitalized for Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years. Throughout it all, Ava has maintained a sense of humor and her beautiful smile fills everyone with joy.
Our hope is that she will someday walk, talk, run and laugh out loud again. She loves to watch videos of her sister and brother, and Justin Bieber always makes her smile. We often talk of taking her to the beach, the American Girl store and Disneyworld, and she grins very big at the thought of that, as well.
