Special people are placed into our lives for multiple reasons. We can learn from them, they can motivate us, and at some point you realize how much of an impact they've had on you. For me, this person was Maria Victoria Sierra-Gonzalez (AKA Aunt Vicki or MVSG).
Team Vicki's Brainiacs was formed in 2013, the year after MVSG was diagnosed with a glioblastoma multiforme (GBM). Vicki was a trooper! Despite having brain surgery, radiation and chemotherapy, she completed the entire 5k like the ultimate fighter that she was. Vicki was not easily defeated. She continued to teach as long as she could, was an inspiration to all of us and in many ways reinforced the importance of a close bond with family and friends.
On May 24, 2014, MVSG passed away after fighting brain cancer for 17 courageous months. As painful as it was to lose her, the memories, experiences and life lessons that she taught us have played a major role in encouraging us to honor her memory and participate anually as a team in the Race for Hope DC. Vicki would have turned 50 years old this April.
Currently, the Race for Hope occurs in 21 cities throughout the nation. The donations and events help to increase brain cancer awareness, raise funds for research and gather people together to show their love and support for the survivors and warriors who've made this such an important cause.
The Race for Hope DC will be held on Sunday, May 5, 2019. If you are interested/available to join Team Vicki's Brainiacs, please sign up. If you can't participate, but you would like to donate to the cause, our team and the National Brain Tumor Society would greatly appreciate it. Any amount will go a long way towards finding a cure.
Thank you for taking the time to explore our team, and for anything you can do to help us honor MVSG.
"She is clothed with strength and dignity and laughs without fear of the future" (Proverbs 31:25)
