Rodney's Beautiful Day Groupies
Rodney's Beautiful Day Groupies is a team made up of the family and friends of Rodney Maze and Noah, Sam and Jill Maze. This is the 12th year for our team and we are excited to participate in the Race for Hope once again. We are so proud of our little team... over the past eleven years, Rodney's Beautiful Day Groupies has raised over $55,000 for brain cancer research in memory of Rodney. This year we hope to hit the $60,000 mark!
In April of 2006, Rodney was diagnosed with gliomatosis cerebri, a rare and aggressive form of brain cancer. At that time, Rodney and Jill were the proud parents of Noah, who was 3 years old, and Jill was 7 months pregnant with their daughter, Sam. The diagnosis was devastating and unfortunately, surgery was not an option, due to the diffuse nature of the tumor. After consulting with several brain tumor experts at various hospitals and universities, Rodney began radiation treatment at Inova Fairfax Hospital, under the guidance of the Brain Tumor Center at Duke University.
During radiation, Rodney battled several major medical setbacks. On Sunday, May 21, 2006, Rodney lost his battle with brain cancer. Sam was born 6 weeks later in July.
Noah and Sam take comfort in the fact that their dad is always watching over them. Noah is now a busy 17 year-old junior at Loudoun Valley High School, who loves running track and cross country. He is also getting excited about college and life after high school. (Yikes!) Noah finished 1st in the 2019 Race for Hope (in the pouring rain), while our family and friends cheered him on, very proud and soggy. Sam is now an outgoing and hard-working 13 year-old who plays travel lacrosse for Pride's Loudoun team. She also loves traveling, hanging out with friends and movie nights. Sam is definitely looking forward to the end of 8th grade and more trips during summer vacation!
We are inspired to carry on Rodney's legacy through our support of the Race for Hope. Rodney was an inspiration, having survived childhood leukemia against all odds. Motivated by his experiences, he became an accomplished scientist and lawyer. Rod received his PhD in Medical and Molecular Genetics from the Indiana University School of Medicine and many of his research articles were published in medical journals. Later, he received his JD from the Indiana University School of Law and he began a career which combined his scientific background and his interest in the law. At the time of his diagnosis, Rodney was working as a lawyer at the U.S. International Trade Commission in Washington, D.C.
Growing up in the Hoosier state and attending IU, Rod was a big fan of IU basketball-- go Big Red! Rodney also loved the band, U2. As he was such a huge fan and one of his favorite songs was "Beautiful Day" we thought the name Rodney's Beautiful Day Groupies was fitting for our team.
On Sunday May 3, 2020, we will be running and walking through Washington, D.C. to raise funds for brain cancer research in Rodney's name and we would love to have your support! Please consider joining our team or making a donation to this worthy cause. We would be honored to have you as one of Rodney's Groupies. Thank you so much!
It will be a Beautiful Day when we find a cure for brain cancer.
Love, Jill, Noah and Sam Maze
