Dear Family and Friends -

It’s' that time again - time for the annual Candlelighters Fun Walk! Please mark your calendars to come out and walk with us on Saturday, September 9th to help raise money for children with cancer and their families. This is a very important walk for us this year.

As you know, Candlelighters is an organization that provides daily services for childhood cancer families and the Fun Walk raises money for those services and programs which are offered FREE to children with cancer and their families.

I cannot believe that it has been eighteen years since I joined Candlelighters! As you all know, I have the great privilege of working with families that are facing or have faced childhood cancer. I love my job and one of the very best aspects of my job is the chance to meet all the families and become friends with them. This is very near and dear to my heart.

Here's what Fun Walk donations will be used toward this year:

1. Hospital Parking Assistance - we've still been able to provide hospital parking financial assistance to families digitally. On January 1st the raised the rates from $15 to $19

2. Emotional Support - families more than ever before are nervous to leave their homes, feeling isolated, being torn apart (thanks to hospital visitor restrictions) and we've been ramping up all our peer-to-peer support efforts. Our weekly support group meetings have grown, and our Parent Consultants are working around the clock to touch base and check-in with our families and their needs.

3. Gas Cards & Grocery Cards - these have probably been our top request

4. Memorial Funds - cancer hasn't quit unfortunately. Children are still being diagnosed and earning their angel wings. Candlelighters provides financial assistance for families to hold memorial services for their children.

In addition to Candlelighters is planning a virtual camp experience for our children. We did this last year - and it was a HUGE hit!

Thank you for supporting my efforts for this amazing organization. Whatever you can give, thank you for helping all the children with cancer and their families that Candlelighters serves!

This year, the Wheelers – John, Tyler, Morgan and I – are forming a walk team. We are going to walk for kids like Caroline and for all the other kids facing childhood cancer. We are going to walk for all the moms and dads who face childhood cancer. Please take a few minutes to watch this video and learn more!

The Fun Walk is Saturday, September 9, 2023 at Terry Hershey Park and begins at 9 a.m. For those of you who may not feel comfortable joining us, you can walk from wherever you are - we are having a hybrid walk this year! Thank you so much to all my awesome friends who have walked or supported us in the past.

Who we Are

Candlelighters Childhood Cancer Family Alliance provides emotional, educational and practical support to families of children with cancer being treated in the Texas Medical Center. We currently partner with all three pediatric oncology programs in Houston: Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital, MD Anderson Children’s Cancer Hospital, and Texas Children’s Cancer Center. Candlelighters began in 1989 with two parent support groups from the Texas Medical Center: one at Texas Children’s Cancer Center and one at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center Children’s Cancer Hospital. The Texas Children’s Hospital group sought formal incorporation, and in 1992 Candlelighters was legally formed. In the fall of 1992, they invited the MD Anderson Parent Group to join them and the two organizations merged into one. This year marks our 30th year supporting childhood cancer families with daily programs and services. It is our greatest honor to have walked this path and use our experience and knowledge to serve those who will continue to come after us

Our Mission Provides Critical Support

Each year we meet more than 300 newly diagnosed families receiving treatment in the Texas Medical Center. While they are receiving treatment from the top facilities in the world, other daily needs can fall to the wayside, and out-of-pocket costs pile up. Studies show that upwards of 95% of families who have a child diagnosed with cancer, will experience financial hardship. Candlelighters seeks to ease the financial and emotional burdens these families face. Funds raised through Fun Walk efforts go directly towards childhood cancer families through our daily services and family programs such as: hospital parking assistance, hospital meal services, gas and grocery cards, and family programs like Summer Surprises, Fall Festival, and Camp CLIFF which is our weekend family camp. Each of our programs and services are offered at NO COST to Candlelighters families, and focus on serving the entire family including siblings and parents - because one day, cancer will be gone, but family is forever.
