Habitat for Humanity of McHenry County

Habitat for Humanity of McHenry County’s Home Repair program helps preserve homeownership by partnering with low income homeowners struggling to restore and maintain a safe and decent place to live. When basic expenses exceed income month after month, home maintenance is often the casualty. Years of deferred maintenance can cause a downward spiral of home deterioration, unsafe living conditions, and even possible condemnation. Home Repairs can fall into one or both of two categories:

Home Preservation: Exterior work that includes painting, patching, minor repairs, and replacement of exterior building materials for maintaining good or sound condition.

Critical Home Repair: Extensive interior or exterior work performed to address health and safety issues or code violations. Critical Home Repair can include change or repair of materials or components of a house, a modification for accessibility, or installation or extension of plumbing, mechanical or electrical systems on an existing home.

Habitat McHenry is also a partner in the veteran community, with access to grants to assist veterans with essential repairs to their homes. These repairs fall under the same definition as Critical Home Repair and have the same eligibility criteria, with the additional requirement of proving an honorable or general discharge. Under these grants, the veteran doesn’t have to be the homeowner, but the home does have to be their primary residence.
