Habitat for Humanity of McHenry County

Habitat for Humanity is able to achieve its mission of helping local families attain decent, affordable housing because of the many hours donated by volunteers. Without our volunteers, we wouldn’t be able to do what we do. From working on a build site to volunteering at the ReStore to joining one of our committees, there’s something for everyone at Habitat McHenry!

Volunteer

Volunteers can participate in the following ways:

Construction

In partnership with the community, we have built 50+ Habitat homes in McHenry County since 1995. Volunteers work under the supervision of trained crew leaders and participate in all phases of the construction process. Tasks may include: framing floors, walls and roofs; shingling roofs; installing siding, insulation and drywall panels; painting; laying tile and laminate floors; installing kitchen cabinets, interior doors and trim; and all the door knobs and shelves that make an empty house start to look like a home. No skills or experience with tools or building is required.

Critical Home Repairs

We have assisted more than 100 homeowners in McHenry County make repairs to their homes that they were unable to do on their own. The repairs we’ve helped with have included re-shingling leaking roofs, replacing rotted or broken windows and doors, repairing structural framing problems, repairing or replacing dilapidated siding, replacing furnaces and water heaters, providing accessibility for wheel chairs or disabilities, painting exterior wood siding and trim, removing dangerous trees and helping clean up overgrown yards. Our trained crew leaders provide all the instructions and tools, and volunteers work alongside the homeowner helping them make the repairs necessary for their home to remain livable. No skills or experience with tools or building is required.

Deconstruction

Beginning in 2012, we began redirecting building materials from construction projects once destined for landfills to our ReStore- which will support our mission. Volunteers are needed to work as a demolition crew to carefully remove building materials such as cabinets, bathroom fixtures, doors, lighting, and trim work from spaces being renovated by their owners. The volunteer crew is led by a skilled crew leader. No particular skill or experience with tools or renovations is needed.

ReStore

The ReStore will sell new and gently used building materials and household items to the general public. Volunteers will provide crucial assistance to the ReStore staff and its customers. Duties may include: sorting and pricing donated items, light cleaning, moving and lifting donations, merchandise pick-ups and customer assistance. If you would like to volunteer at one of our ReStore locations, please contact us at volunteers@habitatmchenry.org or visit our volunteer portal to sign up.

Committee Member

Habitat for Humanity of McHenry County operates a variety of professional committees geared toward improving the impact our affiliate makes with its programs and services. Volunteers are encouraged to attend meetings to discuss current policies/issues and offer solutions/ideas to increase the productivity of the affiliate. Currently, we have openings on our Family Support and Faith in Action committees.

If you would like to get involved or have any questions, please contact Dorian Hare, our Volunteer Coordinator, at volunteers@habitatmchenry.org or (815) 759-9002 ext. 106.
