Every time the door is open…
Week after week, as we unlocked the door to Letoria’s house, she was there, ready to work. Every time. As she demolished old walls, taped drywall and polished windows, a wide smile lit up her face. Letoria couldn’t wait to move in.
When I dropped her off I saw why. Young neighbors glared as they delayed drug pick-ups. I understood why she checks her path when she goes out, clutches her keys and sprints to the car. Gun shots and loud music keep her awake. No one walks in front of the windows in the bedroom.
At 6 and 4 years old, Antwon and Jabari are a highlight of Letoria’s life. While her Navy daughter is deployed, Letoria is guardian to her grandsons. These bright, active little boys cannot play outside their apartment. Ever. The door is never open.
As her senior year begins, Letoria’s daughter, April, has eyes on a STEM career. Letoria drives her to and from school. The bus stop is not safe. The door locks tightly behind as they come home.
You opened a new door for Letoria and her family.
Volunteers worked throughout the summer as they rehabbed a donated solid house in Waukegan. Crews taped drywall and hung siding. Students laid tile. Gardening Together planted wax begonias. Letoria’s joy abounds as she opens her door this holiday season and every single day.
You can open doors for more families in the coming year.

Habitat for Humanity is not a giveaway program. We provide a hand up, not a hand out. Habitat Partner Families invest 500 hours of their own labor (sweat equity) into building and rehabbing their homes and the homes of their neighbors. In addition, Habitat homeowners complete financial and home management workshops to prepare them for successful homeownership.
Habitat houses are sold to partner families at no profit and financed with affordable loans through Habitat for Humanity. No outside bank is used for these loans. Mortgage payments are used to build more Habitat houses.
