Please say NO to Legalizing Marijuana
Dear [Decision Maker],
I am writing because H.R. 3884, the "Marijuana Opportunity Reinvestment and Expungement Act of 2019" (MORE Act) is dangerous, and I hope that you will oppose it. This bill goes well beyond the scope of decriminalizing possession of marijuana, removing penalties for manufacture and distribution as well. Not only this, but it would also legitimize cannabis as an industry by offering Small Business Administration loans specifically to the cannabis industry and by seeking to "minimize barriers to cannabis licensing."
Cannabis is a dangerous drug and certainly not one that should be removed from the Controlled Substances Act altogether. One study found that regular recreational marijuana users had psychotic disorders at a greater rate than users of any other drug:more than cocaine, methamphetamine, amphetamine, LSD, PCP, or alcohol (Niemi-Pynttäri, et al., 2013). And the CDC revealed that as of this February, states reported 2,807 hospitalized cases (included 68 confirmed deaths) of a lung disease linked with vaping and in particular with products containing THC (the "high"-inducing psychoactive substance in marijuana).
Not only is marijuana a dangerous drug to individuals, but it is also dangerous to society where it is legalized. In Colorado, marijuana is the most common substance found in suicides of young people aged 10 to 19. And just this year, the Washington Post reported that "the percentage of Washington state drivers involved in fatal crashes who tested positive for marijuana has doubled since the state legalized the drug for recreational use," based on a AAA study. This bill would open the floodgates for what happened in Colorado and Washington to begin to happen nationwide. We can do better. When you submit your stance on H.R. 3884, I urge you to OPPOSE it for the sake of citizens throughout the nation.
