L.A. Gas Leak: Tell Lawmakers to Pass Emergency Legislation Now!

Infrared Video of LA Gas Leak A massive gas leak in Southern California spewed climate pollution for four months. Though it was declared permanently capped as of February 18, 2016, this is just the beginning of the end of the disaster for those thousands of families driven from their homes. The leak raised major public health concerns and has had a significant impact on California’s progress on limiting greenhouse gas pollution that contributes to climate change.

The legislature has a responsibility to respond to this crisis and to make sure this never happens again. Urge your legislators to support the bills, including SB 380, introduced by State Senator Fran Pavley and Senate pro Tem Kevin de León that would:

  • Strengthen California's Emergency Response: Designate a single point of accountability and responsibility in state government
  • Prevent Future Disasters: Strengthen laws governing regulation of gas storage facilities that affect people, homes, and residences
  • Climate Reality Check: Set new state targets that reduce emissions of short-lived climate pollutants, such as methane from gas storage facilities

Dear [Decision Maker],

As a constituent, I'm asking you to take urgent action in response to the massive gas leak in Porter Ranch. Please support the legislative package to strengthen California's response to potential future gas leaks.

While the urgent crisis in Porter Ranch is finally coming to an end, we need new laws, including SB 380, that will protect Californians from future accidents of this kind. Thank you.

Sincerely,
