Victory: Governor Jerry Brown signs AB 888 to phase out microbeads!Microbeads Pollute the Ocean. Take Action Now!

Washing your face and brushing your teeth are daily activities that shouldn’t cause harm to our environment. Unfortunately, synthetic plastic microbeads from personal care products are entering our local streams and rivers directly from our sinks.

Microbeads are used in hundreds of products including cosmetics, sunscreen, body wash, and toothpaste. They are not biodegradable and absorb various toxins such as DDT, PCBs (flame retardants), and other industrial chemicals. Studies have shown that these microbeads are prevalent in ocean debris piles and even the Los Angeles River. Scientists are concerned about the impacts on humans who eat fish that have ingested or absorbed plastic pollution further tainted with toxic chemicals.

There are plenty of safer and biodegradable alternatives available such as pecan shells, apricot pits, cocoa beans, and so on. AB 888 (Bloom) will phase out the use of plastic microbeads in personal care products.

Update: Governor Brown signed AB 888 into law October 8, 2015!
