Calpine Community Hall, Calpine, CA

Workshop Description

The CNPS Tahoe Basin and Sierra Valley Chapter is excited to offer this fun workshop, led by local botanist and herbalist, Nancy Harnach. Nancy was raised in Sattley, and has spent much of her adult life, with her late husband Bill, dedicated to understanding and describing the flora of Sierra Valley.

In this workshop you will learn about several local native and naturalized plants and their medicinal properties. Nancy will share her knowledge about some of the early plant uses of indigenous peoples of the Sierra Valley, including the Maidu, Paiute and Washoe tribes, along with other well-known herbalists, including Edith Van Allen (1930’s) and other modern herbalists.

The second half of the workshop, you will participate in making an herbal salve to take home. You will learn about the different properties of wild native plants and other common garden plants, and how their natural elements are extracted into oils.
