Even in 2015, even in Oregon, we cannot take voting for granted. oregon state hosue

In today’s competitive political environment, the vote is still highly contested. There are always those who look to discourage or suppress voting or distort the vote count for political advantage. Every ten years, our state legislature reshapes political districts to keep up with shifting populations in an inherently political process. Each election cycle, presidential elections focus on fewer and fewer “battleground” states, making voters in states like Oregon nearly irrelevant. New technology makes old voter registration systems out-of-date. Our electoral system is imperfect and always evolving.

It is on all of us to rise above politics to protect this sacred trust – our right to vote. This means working to promote full enfranchisement and to oppose barriers to voting. It means keeping the process clean, fair and transparent.

To the Oregon Legislature,

As Oregonians, voters and constituents, we call on you to act to preserve a free, fair and accessible election system in Oregon.

Specifically, we look to you to pass:

    • New Motor Voter – to modernize our voter registration system, so that registration is as easy, accurate and efficient as possible

    • Redistricting Reform – to bring more transparency and fairness to this highly political process which affects the relative voting strength of different communities.

    • National Popular Vote – to ensure that the U.S. President is elected by the popular vote, and to make voters in non-swing-states like Oregon relevant in presidential elections

Even in 2015, even in Oregon, we cannot take voting for granted. In a competitive political environment, many look to discourage voting or distort the vote count for political advantage. It is on all of us to rise above politics to protect this sacred trust – our right to vote.

This means working to promote full enfranchisement and to oppose barriers to voting. It means keeping the process clean, fair and transparent.

We hope we can rely on you to stand up for the voters.
