Do I have to register online to walk in my CROP Hunger Walk?
You can register online, but it is not required unless you want to solicit online credit card donations.
I registered last year; do I have to register again?
Yes. During the registration process you will be asked if you are a new or returning Walker. If you select "Returning Walker", the box will expand so that you can enter your username and password (or request them if you don't remember), then click "Login."
On the next page, you will see a Contact Information form. Here you can edit or add additional info, then click "Next Step" to continue your registration.

I registered last year but my Walk's page is no longer there. What happened?
The web addresses (URLs) for all of the CROP Hunger Walk pages are changed each season. When the changes are made (early Summer for the next Fall Walks, late-Fall for Spring events), the URL for the previous year’s event will no longer work. You can access your CROP Hunger Walk from the CWS Walk map: www.cropwalk.org/.
If your event isn’t listed, please email email@example.com with the name of your Walk and the state in which it takes place so that it can be added to the list.
Can I register my friends and family for my CROP Hunger Walk?
After you complete your online registration, you can complete the registration process on behalf of a friend or family member. You will need the participant's name and unique email address.
Once your registration is complete, you will see a "Thank you for signing up" page. Select "Your Walk details > Sign up" in the top menu. When you are back at the sign up page, click "Logout" in the right-hand pane and proceed with the next registration just like you did for yourself the first time.
This is important: the participant's unique email address must be entered. When you register, the system creates a username and password, giving you access to your Participant Center where you can check your progress, update your personal page and send emails to family and friends. If you are registering on behalf of a family member who doesn't have their own unique email, such as a young child, you can sign up for a free email account and use that email address to register them for the CROP Hunger Walk. There are several sites that offer free email accounts, such as Gmail, Yahoo and Hotmail.
You will need to accept the statement of consent/waiver on behalf of the person you are registering (and to inform the person of the content of the waiver). We recommend you download and print the Statement of Consent/Waiver Sign In Sheet, have the person sign it, then turn it in at the registration table on Walk day.

I registered for the wrong CROP Hunger Walk; now what?
Find the correct Walk and register there. Then email email@example.com with your name and the names of both the correct and incorrect event. Indicate if you have sent solicitation emails out from the first registration. You will receive an email when the changes have been made.
I registered for my Walk but I don’t show up in a search of online Walkers; now what?
Log into your Participant Center. Select the "PERSONAL PAGE" option in the top banner, then look at the gray box near the top of the page. If you see "This page is Private." at the bottom of the box, click on "Edit your page settings" to the right.
Then click the button next to "Public", so that people can find and view your page, and click "Save".
If you find that "This page is Public" was already selected, but you don't appear in searches of your Walk's web page, contact firstname.lastname@example.org with your name and the name of your CROP Hunger Walk.
What are teams and how are they created?
By joining or starting a team, you can motivate other Walkers from your congregation, business, organization, family group, etc. Each team has a captain and it's own online team page. Donations can be made to the team, or to an individual member of the team.
To join or start a team:
Click the "Sign Up" button on your Walk’s web page. Then click the "I want to JOIN a team" or "I want to START a team" button.
If you see a list of registered teams, simply find the one you wish to join and click "Join Team". You'll then be taken through the rest of the registration process and registered as a member of that team.
Enter the Team Name in the field. You'll then be taken through the rest of the registration process and registered as the captain of that team.
Each team has 1-2 captains, who are the only persons that can customize the team's web page. If you want a different member of your team to be the captain, or a co-captain, please email email@example.com with your name, the name of your CROP Hunger Walk, the name of your team, the name of the individual, and whether you want them designated as the captain or a co-captain of the team.
Once your team is created, the team captain can edit the team web page from within their Participant Center. The team web page is found in the "Team Page" section. The captain can also use the email function to communicate with members of the team and to invite others to join the team for online fundraising.
I'm having trouble reactivating a previous team ... help!
If you were a member or captain of an online team last year, you can reacivate the team. Start by going back to your Walk's main page. On the right-hand side of the page, you will find the text, "Already registered? Sign in here!" Click that link and, in the next box, enter your username and password from last year's event. Then you will be taken back to the Walk's main web page.
Click the big red "Sign up" button, then the red "I want to START a team!" button. On the next page, enter last year's team name and click "Next Step". You will get a message:
"The team name you entered is already associated with a team from the previous TeamRaiser event. You can form this team again or try entering a different team name."
The words "form this team again" are a hot link. If you click on it you will have recreated the team for this year's event. The next steps will reregister you as the team captain.
When you've completed the registration, you will have access to your last year's personal and team page customizations (if any), as well as your past contact information. From your Participant Center, you can either reuse any last year's custom text or change or update it. Also, the last page of the registration process will have a red button beneath "Thank you for signing up" that will take you to your Participant Center right away.
How do I start a team or join a team if I've already registered as an Individual Walker?
Email firstname.lastname@example.org with your name, the name of your CROP Hunger Walk, and the name of the team you would like to join or create. Indicate if it is a new team and, in that case, include the team name exactly as you want it to appear on your Walk's page. You will receive an email when the changes have been made.
Can I create teams for all of the organizations participating in our CROP Hunger Walk?
It's not recommended that teams be created on behalf of participating organizations unless you are reasonably certain members of the organization will participate in online fundraising.
Before you create a team for an organization other than your own, you will need the name and the email address of a member of that organization and their permission to register them as team captain.
Our CROP Hunger Walk's web page doesn't show a start time and place; how can I get that information?
If the details aren't posted on your Walk's page, contact a member of your local organizing committee for the information. Please encourage them to send the details to their CWS Regional Office or to email@example.com so they can be posted to the page. If you don’t know the local contact, please phone your CWS Regional Office toll free at 1-888-297-2767. They can get you the information or put you in touch with your local committee.
How does online fundraising work?
Once you have registered online, a personal web page associated with your Walk's web page is created for you. You can go to your Participant Center to customize the page with your own title, text, and photo to show those who visit the page why you are walking.
Within the Participant Center are email tools that let you customize and send messages to family and friends asking for their support. When you send the emails, a link to your personal page is automatically included that allows people to make credit card donations that will be credited to you and, if the donor wishes, displayed on your personal page. The system also automatically sends receipts/thank you notes back to the donor.
Can I donate from the CROP Hunger Walk's web page?
Yes! Click the "Donate" button on your CROP Hunger Walk's web page and then, on the next page, choose from the three options.
Clicking "Support an individual" allows you to search for the person by first and last name (or leave both fields blank for a list of all registered Walkers). When you find the right person, click on "Donate Now" to the right of the name, complete the donation form, and your gift will be credited to that person.
Clicking "Support a team" takes you to a list of registered teams. Find the team in the list, click "Donate Now" to the right of the team name, complete the donation form, and your gift will be credited to that team.
Clicking "Donate to the Walk" will take you directly to a donation form and your gift will be credited to the Walk.
Online recognition of donations
I just made a donation and it isn't showing up on my personal page; what happened?
New donations may take 15-30 minutes to post to your personal page. If your donation doesn't appear after that time, email firstname.lastname@example.org with your name and the name of your CROP Hunger Walk – or use our contact form. We will respond as soon as possible during normal business hours.
My friend made a donation to support me, but it doesn't show up on my personal page; what happened?
New donations may take 15-30 minutes to post to your personal page. Also, if the donation was made directly to an online team, it will only appear in the total income shown on the team page, not on your personal page.
If the donation doesn't appear after 1 hour – or if it has been made to a team, but should have been credited to an individual – email email@example.com with the donor's name, the name of your CROP Hunger Walk, and the name of the person it should be credited to (or use our contact form). You will receive an email letting you know if the donation was properly credited, or if was necessary to recredit it.
Online and offline donations
What if I want to get both credit card and cash donations?
You can track both types of donations. Any credit card donations you receive will automatically be credited to you and appear on your personal page. You can enter cash donations manually so they also display on your page. In the "PROGRESS" section of your Participant Center, click on "Enter a new gift" (right-hand vertical banner) and fill in the form.
It's recommended that you get a Donation Envelope from your Walk organizers to collect cash or checks and that you turn them into your Walk's treasurer. If you don't have a contact for your Walk, call your CWS/CROP Regional Office toll free at 1-888-297-2767 for assistance.
Where do I send cash/check donations?

How do I get cash donations to appear on my web page?
To enter cash donations manually so they are also displayed on your page, go to the "PROGRESS" section of your Participant Center, click on "Enter a new gift" and fill in the form.
How can I tell which donations shown on the Walk's page are by credit card and which are by check or cash?
Donation totals on team and personal web pages will include any cash donations manually entered by the participant; therefore it's not possible to use those pages to determine the type of donation.
However, the Walk Statistics page indicates "confirmed donations made online" (with the number in red), which indicates the amount of credit card donations only.
Members of the Walk organizing committee needing detailed information should request a report from their CWS/CROP Regional Office (phone toll free 1-888-297-2767) or by email directly from firstname.lastname@example.org. If you request the report by email, please be sure to include the name of your Walk and your role in its organization. Except for weekends and holidays, the reports will be provided to you within 48 hours or less.
How do I get matching donations from my employer?
If your employer uses paper forms for matching gifts, fill the form out (please include the name of your CROP Hunger Walk) and mail it to:

If your employer uses a downloadable form, download and complete it, then attach it to an email to email@example.com. If they use a web link, copy and paste that into an email to webwalk. Please include the name of your CROP Hunger Walk in your message.
Are donations to CWS tax-deductible?
Church World Service is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt charitable organization. Donations to Church World Service, including donations to CROP Hunger Walks, are fully deductible to the extent permitted by law. The CWS federal identification number is 13-4080201.

Can I raise money for my Walk after it is over?
Yes! Fall 2012 Walk pages will be active until the Fall 2013 events are created in summer 2013.
Your Participant Center
How can I customize my personal page (and my team page)?
Log into your Participant Center. Click on the "PERSONAL PAGE" link. The page that loads is a "WYSIWYG" editing window for the text on your page. You can edit the existing title and body text of the page.
When you have finished your edits, click "Save" to preserve them. Click "Preview" to see what your changes will look like. (Note: If you have difficulty with the "Preview" button, particularly if using Chrome or Safari browsers, you may try using Firefox to access your Participant Center and use this feature.)
Click "Photos/Video" in the right-hand banner, then click "Photos" or "Videos" to update the media content. Follow the prompts to either select a photo or add the URL to a YouTube video.
If you have created a team, the process for editing the team page is similar. Your team page is accessible in the "TEAM PAGE" section of your Participant Center.
How do I upload a photo to my personal page or team page?
Go to your Participant Center, select "PERSONAL PAGE" and click "Photos/Video" in the right-hand banner. Then click "Photos" or "Videos" to add media content to your personal page. Follow the prompts to browse for your photo, select it, click "Open" (in the pop-up box), then click "Save/Upload." If successful, you will see the photo in the preview window and the message "Success! The photo information was updated." to the right of it. The system will not accept the image unless it is in .jpg format and is no larger than 200 Kb.
The most common reason for an error message is too large a file. In Windows operating systems, you can check the file size in Windows Explorer. If your Explorer is set for detail view, it will display file size beside the file name. The easiest way to reduce size is to reduce the dimensions of the photo. The web page display size, 300 X 400 pixels, is small (1.66 inches by 2.27 inches); reducing your photo to near that size and aspect ratio will usually shrink the file size sufficiently. Photo editing programs included with digital cameras or freeware/shareware editing programs available online can usually accomplish the file size reduction. If all else fails, you can email your photo to firstname.lastname@example.org. We will attempt to edit the image to acceptable size and send it back to you.
To upload a photo to a team page, select "TEAM PAGE" then the "Browse.." button to navigate to and select your photo. Then click "Save/Upload". If successful, you will see the image to the right and a "Success! The photo information was updated." message.
How do I change my Team fundraising goal? (for Team captains)
Log into your Participant Center and click on "PROGRESS". Select "Team" in the right-hand column. Your current Team goal will be displayed and, in small letters below it, is a link to change it. Use the link to modify your Team's fundraising goal.
Linking to CROP Hunger Walk pages
Can I get a shorter web address (friendly URL) for my page, my team page or for our Walk's page?
You can create a "friendly" URL for your personal or team page from your Participant Center.
For a personal URL, go to the "PERSONAL PAGE" section. Select "Edit your page settings" from the box that indicates "Make a short URL for your page or Edit privacy settings."
When the box updates, enter a unique identifier in the box below "http://hunger.cwsglobal.org/goto/" then click "Save." If your identifier is already being used by someone else, you will get an error message and be prompted to enter something different; you can often correct this by adding numbers after the identifier, for example: "myname123".
You can create a team short URL by going to the "TEAM PAGE" section and clicking "Edit" after "Team Page URL" near the top of the page.
Friendly URLs for the CROP Hunger Walk event pages are created from our admin account. Email email@example.com with the name of your Walk. Your Walk’s short URL will be sent to you.
Can I link to my Walk's, Team's, or personal page from another Web page?
Yes. Once you have created a friendly URL (or received one for your Walk), you can copy and paste it into another web page. Alternately, you can send it to the other (non-CWS) page's webmaster to add the link for you.
Can our locally hosted Walk page be linked from our CROP Hunger Walk online registration page?
Social media and related accounts
Can I link my Church World Service and Facebook or Google accounts?
To link your Church World Service and Facebook or Google accounts, log out of the CWS website by clicking “Logout” in the yellow box at the top of the page, then return to our login page. Click the link to "Log in using one of your preferred sites."
Select Facebook or Google, and follow the prompts to link the accounts.
Can I share on Facebook from my Participant Center?
Click on the Facebook button in the lower right-hand column in your Participant Center to "Share" a message. A window will pop-up, allowing you to enter a message for your Facebook profile.
Links to both your TeamRaiser personal page and a donation form will be automatically added. If you want to include a link to your Team page, copy its url (or short url, if you've created one) and include that in the message, identifying it as a link to your Team page. If you have difficulty using the Share on Facebook feature, try opening up your Participant Center in a different browser and repeating the above steps or contact firstname.lastname@example.org for assistance.
How do I find out what happened to the emails I sent from my Participant Center?
Log into your Participant Center and click on "EMAIL". Select "Sent" in the right-hand banner to see the emails you've successfully sent. If none of your emails are listed, it means the process didn't properly complete. We recommend when you resend the messages that you do so in small batches, then check to see if they appear in the table.
You can also send a test message from your Participant Center to email@example.com, then send a second email (from your personal email program) to the same address with the subject line: "I sent you a test email". We will let you know if the solicitation email was received.
How do I customize the emails in my Participant Center?
Log into your Participant Center and select "EMAIL". Click the "Use a template" link on the left.
The row will expand to include links to stock messages. Click one to choose it.
The message will populate the "Compose Message" window. You can edit or replace the subject line and body of the message.
Once you have completed the edits, click "Send" near the top of the message. You can also click on "Save as draft" to save this message for a single use later, or click "Save as template" so that you will able to reuse the message more than once.
About the CROP Hunger Walk
What does CROP stand for?
When CROP began in 1947 (under the wing of Church World Service, which was founded in 1946), CROP was an acronym for the Christian Rural Overseas Program. Its primary mission was to help Midwest farm families to share their grain with hungry neighbors in post-World War II Europe and Asia. Today, we’ve outgrown the acronym but we retain it as the historic name of the program. CROP Hunger Walks are interfaith hunger education and fundraising events sponsored by Church World Service and organized by CWS regional offices across the U.S.
Where do CROP Hunger Walk funds go?
CROP Hunger Walks help to support the overall ministry of Church World Service, especially grassroots, hunger-fighting development efforts around the world. In addition, each local CROP Hunger Walk can choose to return up to 25 percent of the funds it raises to hunger-fighting programs in its own community.
CROP Hunger Walks help to provide food and water, as well as resources that empower people to meet their own needs. From seeds and tools, to wells and water systems, to technical training and micro-enterprise loans, the key is people working together to identify their own development priorities, their strengths and their needs – something CWS has learned through some 66 years of working in partnership around the world.
How do CROP Hunger Walks help out here at home?
This year CROP Hunger Walks will share almost $4 million with food banks, pantries, community gardens, and other local efforts across the U.S. This support is made possible when local CROP Hunger Walks choose our unique option of returning up to 25 percent of what their Walk raises to hunger-fighting programs in their own community.
What else makes CROP Hunger Walks special?
Because CROP Hunger Walks are ecumenical, interfaith, multi-cultural events, individual donors have the option of designating their gifts to other approved international hunger-fighting agencies. This option is unique to our events and is available for individual sponsors only. Gifts not otherwise designated go to support the worldwide ministry of Church World Service.
How do I go about starting a CROP Hunger Walk in my community?

If there isn't a CROP Hunger Walk in your area, your CWS Regional Office has all the expertise and free promotional materials to help you take the first steps to a successful, fulfilling CROP Hunger Walk.
Are corporations and businesses involved in CROP Hunger Walks?
Nationally, upwards of 200 corporations match employee gifts and/or volunteer hours to the CROP Hunger Walk. Locally, thousands of businesses and media outlets support their community's CROP Hunger Walk, providing T-shirts and other supplies, turning out teams of Walkers – and in many other ways too numerous to list.
How much of each dollar contributed goes toward overhead?
Over the last five years, on average just over 14.6 percent of the funds contributed to Church World Service has gone to management, fund raising and information sharing.
Besides the CROP Hunger Walk, does Church World Service have other opportunities for mission outreach?
Yes! The Blankets+ Program offers congregations and groups a way to share "tools" both large and small with children and families in need, including blankets, bedding, tents and other shelter items when an emergency or natural disaster occurs.
Congregations and groups also get involved through the CWS Kit Program which provides recovery kits – such as Hygiene Kits, School Kits, Baby Care Kits, and Emergency Clean-up Buckets – that make a world of difference in emergency situations or areas of ongoing great need.
Alternative Holiday Fairs offer a meaningful way to celebrate Christmas and other holidays by providing symbolic gifts that make a real difference to people in need.

CROP Hunger Walk demographics
- 68 percent are over 18, average age is 33.5.
- About two-thirds are women.
- 64 percent of CROP Hunger Walkers over age 18 have a college or advanced degree. Half are professionally employed in their communities.
- Half are CROP Hunger Walking for their second, third, fourth, or more time.
- 73 percent of participants say fighting hunger locally and globally is their key reason for taking part.
- 53 percent say the CROP Hunger Walk is the only fund-raising marathon-type activity in which they participate.
- Walkers get about 95 percent of their sponsors from their place of worship, family, neighborhood and workplace.
