Agenda (tentative)
DBSA Chapter Leaders tell us frequently that they wish they knew more about meeting people at their level of recovery so that they can better serve all the people that come to their support groups. That's what this year's Chapter Leadership Forum is about!
Drawing from our nationally recognized Peer Specialist Training Curriculum*, we'll be holding sessions on the Five Stages of Recovery, the dangers of each and what we, as chapter leaders, can do to help people move forward at their own pace.
8:30am – 10:00am Registration/Check-in Desk Open
10:00am – 10:45am From Surviving to Thriving When so many are struggling with making it day-to-day, how can we even begin to share the idea of thriving with them? Isn’t “better” good enough? Come learn why it’s important to make “thriving” the goal in your support groups and how you can do this while still meeting people at their stage of recovery.
10:45am – 11:45am The Five Stages of Recovery and Their Dangers In this session we will explore the five basic stages of recovery that we are likely to encounter in support group participants. We will also discuss the possible dangers at each stage that prevent people from moving forward.
11:45am – 12:15pm Recognition of Chapter Service Awards and Life Unlimited Awards Celebration is one of the fundamental components of recovery and we have a lot to celebrate! Join us as we recognize our 2013 Chapter Service Award winners for their amazing accomplishments! You’ll also get a chance to hear from DBSA’s 2014 Life Unlimited Award winner. This award honors people who exemplify a life unlimited by depression or bipolar disorder and who are actively working to help others do the same.
12:15pm – 1:30pm Networking Lunch (provided)
1:30pm – 2:30pm Creating an Environment that Supports Recovery How can DBSA chapters promote recovery? Come learn what some of our most successful chapters are doing in their communities! This session will be chock full of ideas that you can bring home to your chapter!
2:30pm – 2:45pm Break
2:45pm – 3:45pm Helping in Each Stage of Recovery Now that we know the different stages of recovery – what can we do to help people move forward? We’ll be brainstorming helpful ideas as well as discussing the importance of asking the right questions to assist people in problem solving for themselves.
3:45pm – 4:15pm Leaving Committed to Action Just like in our recovery-focused support groups, we want to leave committed to action! Join us for a short exercise to bring all we’ve learned together and make plans for how we will implement new ideas when we return home.
*Please note: While many of the sessions will be based on materials in our nationally-recognized peer specialist training, participating in these sessions does not certify you as a peer specialist.
