How many flights of stairs does Salesforce
61. (That's 1,762 steps!)
How long does Runyon Up take?
This depends on your fitness level, speed, and amount of time spent at rest areas. Elite climbers may finish the 61-story climb in less than 10 minutes, while the average participant will take 15-30 minutes to finish.
Is this a timed climb?
Yes. ChronoTrack D-Tags will be attached to your bib number and will record your finish time. The D-Tag should be attached to your shoe. Preliminary finish times will be posted at the post-climb party on the plaza. Official results will be posted here.
Can climbers stop on a landing to
catch their breath?
Yes, but be aware that other climbers are coming up behind you, and you should try to stay out of their way. Slower climbers should stay to the right allowing faster climbers to pass on the left.
I might get tired and be unable
to finish, what should I do?
No problem, just find a volunteer or staff member who can escort you to the nearest rest area and direct you to an elevator.
What is an “elite” climber?
An elite climber is a competitive stair climber who routinely participates in stair climb events and can run up the stairs, completing the climb in a very fast time. Most participants are NOT elite climbers. The average Runyon Up participant will climb at a moderate pace and consider a 61-story climb to be a bit more strenuous than their typical gym workout.
After I climb to the top, how
will I get to the post-climb party on the plaza?
Once you’ve had a chance to catch your breath, hydrate, and take in the views, you will be directed to an elevator to the ground level, then directed to the plaza.
Do I have to climb all the way to
the top in order to participate in Runyon Up?
If you’re not up for climbing 61 stories, you can join the Virtual Climb! Flex your fundraising muscle to get a ride to the top – virtual climbers must raise at least $1,500 for cancer research to take the elevator instead of climbing to the 61st Floor.
Do virtual climbers need to pay
the entry fee?
Yes. Virtual climbers will receive an event t-shirt and medal and can attend the post-climb party on the plaza, so must pay the entry fee in addition to meeting the elevated minimum fundraising requirement of $1,500.
Can virtual climbers attend the post-climb
Yes! Virtual climbers are welcome to attend the post-climb party on the plaza after taking in the views on the 61st Floor.
Why am I being assigned a start
Climbers’ start times must be staggered, with elite climbers starting first, to avoid congestion and ensure everyone’s safety in the stairwells.
How will I know my wave and start
You can choose your preferred start time window when you register. Elite Climbers who plan to climb competitively will be scheduled in Wave 1 at 8:30 am. All other climbers can select a one-hour window for their start time on a first-come, first-served basis. You may choose from the following start time windows, pending availability:
8:30 am – 9:30 am
9:30 am – 10:30 am
10:30 am – 11:00 am
When will I receive my start
Start times will be posted on the Runyon Up website and emailed to climbers the week of the event. Every effort will be made to schedule your start time during the preferred start time window you indicate when you register, but we cannot make any guarantees. Assignments will be based on the date you register, so the sooner you sign up, the more likely you are to get your preferred start time!
How many people will be assigned
to each wave and how often will waves be launched?
Participants will be launched in waves of approximately 65 people every 15 minutes, with climbers starting in 7-second intervals.
I want to climb with my team,
family or a group of friends. Will we be able to start the climb together?
Yes, but you must be part of a team in order to be assigned the same start time. Please try to confirm your group's preferred start time window prior to registering.
Are team members assigned the
same start times?
Yes, team members will be assigned the same start time UNLESS a team member indicates that he or she is an elite climber while the rest of the team is not. All elite climbers will be assigned to the first wave starting at 8:30 am.
Can I change my start time?
We will make every effort to schedule your start time during the preferred start time window you indicate when you register, but times will be assigned on a first-come, first-served basis. Please email firstname.lastname@example.org if you have any questions.
Can I pick up my race packet in advance?
Race packets will be available for advance pick-up at Fleet Feet, located at 780 Mission Street (on the corner of Mission and 4th Street) in San Francisco. You may pick up your bib number and Runyon Up t-shirt on Friday, October 19, from 4–7 pm. Please be green and bring your own bag! If you will be picking up packets for a group or team of 10 or more people, please notify us by emailing email@example.com so we can try to prepare them in advance. Please note that you still need to bring photo ID with you on event day, even if you pick up your bib number in advance. Photo IDs must be checked on-site on Sunday prior to your climb.
