If you’re not up for climbing to the top, you can register as a virtual climber. You’ll need to exercise your fundraising muscle to take the elevator though – virtual climbers must raise a minimum of $1,500 for cancer research, in addition to paying the entry fee. Virtual climbers will receive a t-shirt and medal, and can join the post-climb party on the plaza.
When is the deadline to register
for Runyon Up?
Registration will close at 5:00 pm PDT on Wednesday, October 17. We are unable to accept new registrants after this time, and there will be no event day registration, per building and Salesforce security.
Is any portion of my entry fee
No. The entry fee helps cover the cost of producing Runyon Up, and includes a participant t-shirt and medal. This is why fundraising is so important! All donations made or raised above and beyond your entry fee are tax-deductible.
Why should I fundraise?
Cuts in federal research funding put us at risk of losing this generation’s best young scientists to other careers. Every penny raised will help us to sustain and grow our programs, so that Damon Runyon can continue to play a role in keeping those brilliant minds focused on beating cancer.
Can I register friends or family members at
the same time I register?
Yes. After you provide your registration details, just click the blue button that says "Register Another Person" when you get to the Registration Summary page.
Can I climb with family and friends?

If I am no longer able to make it to Runyon Up after registering, can I get a refund or have someone else climb in my place?
No, participation is non-transferrable and registration fees are non-refundable. Photo IDs will be checked on site. The name of the registered climber must match the name on the climber’s photo ID. If you are no longer able to climb, your registration fee will become a fully tax-deductible contribution to cancer research. Thank you for understanding.

Can I pay for my whole team by company
Yes, a team can submit one check from its company for every team member’s registration fee.
How do we register our company team if paying by check?
We will provide the Team Captain with a discount code that he or she will need to provide to each team member, who will then enter it when registering online. Is there a fundraising minimum?
Yes. To ensure the fundraising success of this event, there is a minimum requirement of $150 for each participant. That’s less than $3 per floor of the building you need to raise for cancer research – we know you can do it! We encourage everyone to step up and raise as much money as they can!
Can I still fundraise after event day?
YES! We encourage everyone to raise additional funds through November 16.
I saw on the home page that gifts could potentially be matched.
How does this match work?
One of our generous donors (a private foundation that prefers to remain anonymous in its charitable endeavors) is challenging us to raise as much money as possible and has agreed to match 1:1 all first-time donations made in support of Runyon Up. This means that any new donors you recruit to support your climb will have their donations matched, doubling your impact!
I’ve participated in Runyon Up and/or the Runyon 5K before, and my
family and friends who supported me in the past plan to donate again. Will
their gifts be matched?
The goal of the foundation offering the match is to help us find new donors, so their guidelines state that only new or increased gifts will be matched. If your past supporters increase their giving from a prior year by any amount, that amount will be matched! For example, if your friend previously donated $10 to your run, walk or climb, but donates $20 this year, $10 of that gift will be matched. Donors who renew their gifts are our champions, and we need their continued support!
How will this event help fund
100% of each donation raised in support of a participant’s climb will directly support cutting-edge scientific research. Our low administrative and fundraising costs are paid by Damon Runyon Broadway Tickets and from our endowment.

What is the Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation's connection to the Bay Area?
The Foundation is based in New York but has longstanding partnerships with leading Bay Area research institutions, with nearly 30% of our current funding going to the Bay Area. Over the past 71 years, we have granted nearly $63 million to top young scientists at Stanford, UCSF, UC Berkeley and UC Santa Cruz. More than 200 scientists who have received funding from Damon Runyon work in the Bay Area, in both academia and biopharma.
What does Damon Runyon, the iconic sportswriter and
journalist, have to do with a cancer research foundation?
Damon Runyon died from throat cancer in 1946. His good friend, Walter Winchell, renowned journalist and radio commentator, went on his famous radio program and appealed to “Mr. and Mrs. America” for contributions to help fight cancer. The response was overwhelming, enabling Winchell to establish the “Damon Runyon Cancer Memorial Fund” with the mission of supporting the most promising early career scientists across the nation.
Does Damon Runyon also have a connection to Broadway?
Yes, his beloved Broadway short stories were later transformed into the hit musical, Guys and Dolls.
What are the goals of the Foundation?
• Identify and fund the best and brightest early career scientists in cancer research
• Enable risk taking on bold new ideas
• Accelerate the translation of scientific discoveries into new diagnostic tools and treatments
