What is the Virtual Runyon 5K?
In light of growing concerns regarding the spread of the COVID-19 Delta variant, and to continue keeping our community safe, the Runyon 5K will be held virtually and will not take place at Yankee Stadium in 2021. Instead, runners and walkers can complete a 5K wherever and whenever it's convenient for them! All Virtual Participants will have a personal online fundraising page and are encouraged to raise money for cancer research. The Virtual Runyon 5K experience is different, but our goal remains the same: to strike out cancer!

Where should I run or walk?
Run or walk in your neighborhood, in a local park, or on a treadmill at home. Please adhere to all local, state, and federal Covid-19 safety protocols in place while running your 5K. Share photos of your run/walk location with us using #Runyon5K!

When will the Virtual Runyon 5K take place?
Run or walk virtually with us on Saturday, October 9 – or choose any date that works for you and your team. Be sure to follow @Runyon5K on FacebookInstagram and Twitter and tag your success with #Runyon5K. You can also share your photos with Runyon 5K at Yankee Stadium on Facebook.

I’m not available to run or walk on October 9, can I still participate?
Yes! You can run or walk anytime - choose the date that works best for you!

Will I have the option to submit my finish time?
You will have the option to upload your race results through October 12. Participants who register by October 9 will receive an email from Race Roster within 24-48 hours of registering with a confirmation number and instructions on how to submit their finish time. Submitting finish times is completely optional, not required!

How will I track my distance and finish time if I decide to submit my results?
You can use GPS fitness-tracking apps like Strava, MapMyRun, MapMyWalk, Runkeeper, Nike Run Club, Garmin, etc., to record your results.

Will I receive a race bib and event t-shirt?
Virtual Participants can download and print their own race bibs to pin to their shirts while they complete their virtual run/walk. You can download our 2021 race bib here or if you’d like to choose your own bib number, you can fill in your favorite number and download your bib here. Participants who sign up by October 9 and pay the optional $25 registration fee will receive a Runyon 5K t-shirt. See REGISTRATION DETAILS below for more information.

Will tribute bibs be available this year?
Yes! You can download and print In Honor Of tribute bibs here, In Memory Of tribute bibs here, and Survivor bibs here, and pin them to your shirt for your virtual run/walk.


Do I still need to register for the event?
Yes, all supporters who plan to participate in the Virtual Runyon 5K should register and gain access to a personal online fundraising page.

What is the registration fee for the Virtual Runyon 5K?
Registration for the Virtual Runyon 5K is free! We also have a $25 registration option - available through October 9 - that allows you to reserve a Runyon 5K t-shirt, which will be mailed to you in November. This entry fee is for participants of all ages. 

Is any portion of the optional $25 registration fee tax-deductible?
No. The fee helps cover the costs of producing and shipping the t-shirts. This is why fundraising is so important! All donations made or raised above and beyond the optional registration fee are tax-deductible.

Can I make a donation in addition to paying the registration fee to receive a t-shirt?
Yes, and we encourage you to do so! You will have the option to make an additional donation to support cancer research when registering.

I usually wear my Runyon 5K t-shirt on event day, can I get it in advance so I can wear it for my virtual run/walk?
Given the current circumstances and unpredictable nature of postal service shipping times, we are not able to guarantee prompt deliveries and will ship t-shirts after October 9. If you've participated in the past, we encourage you to wear your favorite Runyon 5K t-shirt from a previous event! Please share photos of your run/walk with us on social media using #Runyon5K.

I don't need a t-shirt and will opt for free entry – can I make a donation?
Yes, and we encourage you to do so! You will still have the option to make a donation to support cancer research when registering.

When is the deadline to register for the Virtual Runyon 5K? 
Online registration will remain open beyond October 9, though you'll
 need to sign up by October 9 to choose the option that includes a t-shirt or if you want to submit your finish time. 

Can I register friends or family members at the same time I register?
Yes. After you provide your registration details, just click the blue button that says "Register Another Person" when you get to the Registration Summary page.

If I am no longer able to participate in the Virtual Runyon 5K after registering, can I get a refund if I paid the $25 registration fee?
No, this registration fee is non-refundable. We will still send you your t-shirt, even if you can't complete the virtual run/walk!


How do I create a team?
You can create a team when you register online by selecting the option to “Create a Team” – you will become the Team Captain and will be asked to enter the Team Name. Those who wish to join your team can then register by selecting the option to “Join a Team.”

Is there a limit on team size?
No - sign up as many teammates as you can!

How do I join a team?
To join an existing team, select the “Join a Team” option, and search for the team name. Once you find the team you wish to join, click Join, and proceed with registration.

How do I join a team if I am already registered as an individual?
In your Participant Center, click Change Team Membership on the right side of the page.  Search by team or captain name, and select Join Team when you see the team you wish to join.  

Can I create a new team after I have registered as an individual?
Yes! Please contact us, and we will set the team up for you.   


Is there a minimum fundraising requirement?
No, there is no minimum fundraising requirement, but we encourage you to fundraise! The COVID-19 pandemic has affected scientists in the critical earliest stages of their careers, as laboratory shutdowns have impeded progress, and physician-scientists were recruited to the frontlines of COVID-19 care. During these challenging and uncertain times, your support is more critical than ever to helping Damon Runyon achieve its goals in the fight against cancer. 

How will this event help fund cancer research?
100% of each donation raised in support of a participant’s run/walk will directly support cutting-edge scientific research funded by the Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation.

I saw on the home page that my fundraising efforts could be rewarded with free virtual Pilates classes. How does this work?
Through our partnership with Good Enough Pilates, the fundraising you do for the Virtual Runyon 5K will not only help strike out cancer, you'll also have the opportunity to participate in free Pilates classes via Zoom! The more you fundraise, the more Pilates classes you'll earn!
• If you raise $100, you'll be eligible for 4 free group Pilates classes (by Zoom).
• If you raise $250, you'll be eligible for 8 free group Pilates classes (by Zoom).
• For individuals who raise $500 or more, you'll be eligible for 10 free group Pilates classes (by Zoom) + 1 private Pilates class (by Zoom or in person if in NYC).
• For teams who raise $1,000 or more, you'll be eligible for 10 free group Pilates classes (by Zoom) + 2 private team classes (by Zoom or in person if in NYC).

How do I turn in any pledges collected offline?
If you have collected checks or cash in support of your run/walk, you may submit your collected pledges along with our offline donation form by mail to:

Who was Damon Runyon?
Damon Runyon was an American journalist and short story writer who began his career as a baseball journalist and revolutionized how the game was covered. He is best known for his short stories celebrating the world of Broadway in New York City that grew out of the Prohibition era, which were later transformed into the hit show, Guys & Dolls.

What does Damon Runyon have to do with a cancer research foundation?
Damon Runyon died from throat cancer in 1946. His good friend, Walter Winchell, renowned journalist and radio commentator, went on his famous radio program and appealed to “Mr. and Mrs. America” for contributions to help fight cancer. The response was overwhelming, enabling Winchell to establish the “Damon Runyon Cancer Memorial Fund” with the mission of supporting the most promising early career scientists across the nation.

Is there a connection between Damon Runyon and the fundraising deadline chosen for the Virtual Runyon 5K?
Yes! December 15, 2021 is the 75th Anniversary of the Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation.

What are the goals of the Foundation?
• Identify and fund the best and brightest early career scientists in cancer research
• Enable risk-taking on bold new ideas
• Accelerate the translation of scientific discoveries into new diagnostic tools and treatments
