Support a Strong Farm Bill in 2018

Help end Hunger! Support a strong Farm Bill in 2018!

Farm Bill 2018

Soon the House and Senate will convene a conference committee to resolve the differences between their respective 2018 Farm Bills. Now our work begins in earnest!

Our vision of the Farm Bill is one that is faithful to caring for our land in ways that protect our resources and the ecology for future generations, while ensuring rural communities continue to flourish and thrive. “Through the calling of agriculture, farmers produce the grain for our daily bread and the rest of our food supply” (Social Statement: Sufficient, Sustainable Livelihood for All) and helps us live into God's hope for humanity, where as children of God, each of us can go through the day well nourished, and living to our best potential.

God’s power is active through us. As Lutherans, we know that “we are to love the earth as God loves us” (Social Statement: Caring for Creation: Vision, Hope and Justice), we can be faithful to this call by advocating for policies that care for God’s creation and assist our neighbors as they seek their daily bread.

Your voice makes a difference. Contact your Senators and Representatives and urge them to support the Agriculture Improvement Act (S.3042), which:

  • Puts forth the needs of diverse communities and exemplifies collaborative leadership that focuses on the unity of our nation.
  • Protects the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, a critical program that helps families get access to daily food and enables many to break through the cycle of poverty.
  • Safeguards international food assistance programs and improves the ways in which these programs are administered to better serve local communities and reinforce food security abroad.
  • Guarantees strong program support for farmers while deploying principles that promote innovation in conservation, energy efficiency, and rural development; and that protects our natural resources from environmental degradation.

Be sure to use ELCA Advocacy resources to schedule an in-district meeting with your legislators. The most important tools you have, aside from your testimonies, include a Farm Bill 101 Factsheet, and a Leave Behind Document for you to share with your legislator’s office. Should you have any questions, and an interest in setting up virtual trainings for you and your congregations, be sure to reach out to
