Oppose House Farm Bill and Cuts to SNAP

Help end Hunger! Support a strong Farm Bill in 2018!

Farm Bill 2018

The U.S. House of Representatives could vote this week on a 2018 Farm Bill that will take food away from hungry and vulnerable families while creating new bureaucracies and regulations for states. Your voice makes a difference.

Customize a message to your member of Congress below, and urge them to oppose H.R. 2, the Agriculture and Nutrition Act, today!

HR 2 poses a serious threat to millions of Americans who rely on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP, formerly known as Food Stamps) to help feed their families. Nearly two million hungry Americans would be cut from the program due to new, rigid work requirements, redirected funds and additional bureaucratic hurdles. These changes disproportionally affect single parents and their kids, and make it even harder for millions of people to break the cycle of poverty.

In the Gospel of Matthew Jesus urges us to love our neighbors through caring for their basic needs, saying, “for I was hungry, and you gave me food, I was thirsty, and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me” (Matthew 25:35, NRSV). Strong funding for SNAP and compassionate structures for food assistance programs ensure that we faithfully answer this call to serve millions of our neighbors who face hunger each day. Put your faith into action and urge your legislators to stand against cuts or harmful changes to a program that provides many with their daily bread.

Your actions have and will continue to make a difference. We will raise our voices together to call on Congress to support a strong 2018 Farm Bill. Learn more about HR.2 the Agriculture and Nutrition Act.

Be sure to use ELCA Advocacy resources to schedule an in-district meeting with your legislators. The most important tools you have, aside from your testimonies, include a Farm Bill 101 Factsheet, and a Leave Behind Document for you to share with your legislator’s office. Should you have any questions, and an interest in setting up virtual trainings for you and your congregations, be sure to reach out to washingtonoffice@elca.org.
