Cousins For A Cure
On July 21, we’re riding to cure Friedreich’s ataxia (FA), a debilitating, life shortening neuromuscular disease. We’ll ride with local FA families, friends and cycling enthusiasts to redefine what is possible in FA research.
Team Cousins for a Cure was started in 2018 to show our support for Scarlett and Lilah who were diagnosed with FA at the age of 6. Our team consisted of over 25 family members who either rode or cheered our riders on. We will participate again in 2019 to continue to help raise funds to support research towards one day finding a treatment or cure. If you are looking to become involved, please contact one of our riders for information as we would love to grow our team to friends as well.
No approved treatment or cure exists today for FA...we ride to help change that. By participating in rideATAXIA we are raising funds for the Friedreich's Ataxia Research Alliance (FARA) which helps to identify potential treatment and cures and issues grants towards research. FARA is dedicated and passionate about finding a cure as many of the staff are personally affected by FA either themselves or through a family member.
In 2019, the first treatment for FA will enter its final phase for potential approval by the FDA. If successful, this will be the first approved treatment for FA. While this will be a remarkable milestone to offer some sort of treatment, it still does not provide a cure. Significant steps are being made using gene therapy as a way to cure many previously incurable diseases. Research is ongoing to evaluate the ability to use gene therapy as a cure for FA. Please help us keep that momentum and research going by supporting our efforts.
Join us in supporting the urgent pace of that research. Donate. Together we will cure FA!
