New York: Protect Farm Animals from Extreme Confinement
More than 250 million animals in the United States are forced to spend nearly their entire lives packed into tiny crates or cages, enclosures so small they can’t even turn around.Veal crates, gestation crates, and battery cages are so cruel that they’re illegal across the European Union and have been condemned by the Pew Commission on Industrial Farm Animal Production, which included former Kansas governor John Carlin and former Secretary of Agriculture Dan Glickman (who also chaired the House Committee on Agriculture for years), as well as farmers and ranchers. These crates are condemned by every animal protection group in the world, including those that promote meat-eating. Now is the time for New York to join the nine other states that have already enacted legislation outlawing these types of inhumane confinement systems by passing Rep. Linda Rosenthal's New York Prevention of Farm Animal Cruelty Act, A424, which bans all three systems, or A1656 which bans crates for pregnant pigs and calves.TAKE ACTIONPlease make a brief, polite call to your state representative and senator. Please ask your Representative to co-sponsor A424 and A1656, and ask your Senator to introduce companion legislation. Look up your legislator's phone number here. You can say to your Representative: “I would like you to co-sponsor Rep. Linda Rosenthal's bills to protect farm animals, A424 and A1656. ” For your Senator, you can say, “I am calling to ask Sen. XXXXX to introduce legislation to protect farm animals, patterned on Rep. Rosenthal’s Assembly Bill 424.” Please be sure to ask for a call or email reply to your request, and feel free to forward that to Bruce@FarmSanctuary.org.After making your phone call (please do not skip that crucial step!), fill in and submit the form below to automatically send a follow-up message to your state senator and representative. Legislators receive a lot of email, so be sure to edit your message so it stands out.
