Stop Antibiotic Abuse on Factory Farms: Urge the FDA to Enforce Stricter Regulations

Despite potentially serious threats to human health, roughly 70 percent of antimicrobials in the U.S. are used by the animal agriculture industry. Recognizing that antibiotic use on farm animals has become necessary to maintain the cruel and unnatural conditions of factory farms, agriculture interests have pushed for relaxed regulations. Now, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is considering a rule that may make it easier for factory farmers to obtain and use these drugs.

Because so many animals on factory farms are crammed into tight confinement where proper sanitation is difficult, if not impossible, to maintain, farm animals are routinely fed antibiotics to prevent disease and force them to grow faster and larger despite their stressful environments. As the many negative effects of factory farming on human health, animal welfare and the environment are becoming ever undeniable, now is not the time to weaken antibiotics regulations.

The overuse of antibiotics on farm animals has been linked to increased drug resistance in common bacteria like salmonella, E. coli and Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), threatening our ability to treat illness and disease in humans. This is especially true for the most vulnerable of Americans, including children and the elderly. The American Academy of Pediatrics and other leading health and medical organizations have advocated for more responsible use of antibiotics by the animal agriculture industry in order to protect public health. In fact, the FDA even issued a draft guidance document acknowledging this connection between human health and antibiotic use on factory farms but merely made unenforceable recommendations to limit the use of certain drugs.

You Can Help

As the FDA considers weakening its regulations, we must speak out against the overuse and misuse of antibiotics on farm animals. Using the form below, please send a quick e-mail urging the FDA to protect public health and discourage cruel factory farming practices by refusing to relax its oversight of antibiotic use by the industrial animal agriculture industry and enforcing stricter regulations.
