Help Promote Employment Opportunities for Individuals with SMA!

Ask your Members of Congress to Cosponsor the Disability Employment Incentive Act

Legislation supported by Cure SMA was introduced to promote employment for individuals with SMA and other disabilities.

The Disability Employment Incentive Act (S. 630; H.R. 3765) would expand three business tax credits to remove employment barriers and incentivize the hiring, retention, and promotion of people with disabilities.

The SMA community identified employment as a top priority in the recent Cure SMA advocacy survey. Ask your Members of Congress to make employment for people with SMA a priority by supporting the Disability Employment Incentive Act (S. 630; H.R. 3765)

Please Sponsor and Support the Disability Employment Incentive Act!

Dear [Decision Maker],

As your constituent and a supporter of Cure SMA, the leading national organization that advocates for individuals with a neuromuscular disease known as spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), I ask that you sponsor the Disability Employment Incentive Act (S. 630; H.R. 3765) to promote employment opportunities and remove employment barriers for jobseekers with disabilities, including those with SMA.

Adults and young adults with SMA identified employment among their highest priorities in a 2020 Cure SMA survey. Employment provides individuals with SMA independence, financial security, and the ability to live and fully participate in their communities. About 13% of the adults and young adults (over age 18) with SMA who responded to the Cure SMA survey reported that they were unemployed, but actively seeking employment. Overall, the unemployment rate for individuals with disabilities is double the rate of individuals without disabilities.

The Disability Employment Incentive Act would help incentivize the hiring of individuals with SMA and other disabilities by expanding three business tax credits. The legislation (S. 630; H.R. 3765) would increase the Work Opportunity Tax Credit for employers who hire an eligible person with a disability, the Disability Access Expenditures Tax Credit for small businesses who make their workplaces accessible for employees with disabilities, and the Architectural and Transportation Barrier Tax Credit for businesses who remove a physical barrier, such as a building entrance or transportation vehicle.

Supporting the Disability Employment Incentive Act will incentivize hiring, retention, and promotion of people with disabilities and make workplaces more accessible for all workers and their customers. Thank you for considering my views.

Sincerely,
