Expand Accessible Community Transportation Options for Individuals with SMA!

Ask your Members of Congress to Cosponsor the Disability Access to Transportation Act

Legislation was introduced in Congress to improve and expand community transportation options that are accessible and reliable for individuals with SMA and other disabilities.

The Disability Access to Transportation Act (H.R. 1697; S. 2038) would, among other things, fund rural and urban projects aimed at enhancing mobility of seniors and individuals with disabilities, such as purchasing accessible transit vehicles, implementing wheelchair lifts, establishing volunteer driver programs, and installing way-finding technology. In addition, the legislation would implement accessible transportation standards and create pilot programs focused on the needs of users, including reducing the time and stops for paratransit services.

We need your help to grow support for this important legislation!

Please Cosponsor and Support the Disability Access to Transportation Act (H.R.1697; S. 2038)!

Dear [Decision Maker],

As your constituent and a supporter of Cure SMA, the leading national organization that advocates for individuals with a neuromuscular disease known as spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), I ask that you sponsor the Disability Access to Transportation Act to promote accessible community transportation options for individuals with SMA and other disabilities.

Many people with SMA utilize a mobility device, such as a power wheelchair, because SMA robs individuals of physical strength and can take away their ability to walk. Individuals with SMA rely on accessible transportation options to access their community and to participate in regular activities of daily living, such as going to school, work, or other events and activities.

The Disability Access to Transportation Act (H.R.1697; S. 2038) would help expand reliable and convenient community transportation options for people with disabilities, including individuals with SMA. The legislation would provide states with increased Federal Transit Administration (Section 5310 Formula Grant Program) funding for rural and urban accessible transportation projects such as purchasing accessible transit vehicles, implementing wheelchair lifts, establishing volunteer driver programs, and installing way-finding technology. In addition, the legislation would establish pilot projects focused on the needs of users with disabilities, including reducing the time and stops for paratransit services. These changes will improve and expand accessible transportation options that will benefit all Americans, particularly older adults and people with disabilities.

Please cosponsor the Disability Access to Transportation Act. Your support will help to ensure this important legislation is considered and approved in the 117th Congress. Thank you for considering my views.

Sincerely,
