End the Marriage Penalty & Expand Benefits in SSI!

Ask your Members of Congress to Cosponsor the Supplemental Security Income Restoration Act

Legislation has been introduced in Congress to remove the marriage penalty and make significant improvements to the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program.

SSI is a federal program helps older adults (over age 65) and individuals with disabilities (including SMA) meet their basic living needs such as food, clothing, and shelter. The program -- last updated 3 decades ago -- has failed to keep up with everyday living costs, forcing many SSI beneficiaries to live below the poverty line. In addition, SSI includes very low income and asset limits, beneficiaries are penalized if a family member helps with rent, groceries or other in-kind support, and married couples who both qualify for SSI receive 25% less in benefits than had they applied as unmarried individuals.

The Supplemental Security Income Restoration Act (H.R.3824 & S. 2065) would help raise these limits, which will also benefit non-SSI beneficiaries given SSI guidelines impact certain eligibility for Medicaid attendant care and other home and community-based services. Congressional leaders are hoping to include these important SSI changes in legislation to address our country’s recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic.

We need your help to prioritize these important changes, which will help individuals with SMA and others who receive assistance through SSI.

Please Support the Supplemental Security Income Restoration Act!

Dear [Decision Maker],

As your constituent and a supporter of Cure SMA, the leading national organization that advocates for individuals with a neuromuscular disease known as spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), I ask that you sponsor the Supplemental Security Income Restoration Act (H.R. 3824/S. 2065).

Supplemental Security Income (SSI) is a federal program that helps individuals with significant disabilities and older adults over 65 meet their basic living needs such as food, clothing, and shelter. The program, which was signed into law in 1972 by President Nixon, must be updated to better reflect today's costs and to meet the needs of individuals with SMA and others who utilize SSI benefits to live and survive. The current federal benefit of $794 per month for an individual is well below the federal poverty line. The program's unreasonably low asset limits and other financial constraints have meant extreme poverty, even homelessness, for some SSI beneficiaries.

The SSI Restoration Act (H.R. 3824/S. 2065) would modernize the program to reflect today's cost of living and make other important improvements. Among other things, the bill would align the benefit to the federal poverty level, raise the asset limit for individuals and couples, exclude retirement accounts from the asset calculation, and eliminate the marriage penalties and in-kind support and maintenance provisions.

As your constituent, I ask that you sponsor the SSI Restoration Act and work to include the bill's provisions in legislation being considered to address our country's recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic. Thank you for considering my views.

Sincerely,
