With the announcement of the upcoming resignation of the current Chair of the Landmarks Preservation Commission, the new chair should be someone who has a real record of supporting and advocating for the preservation of our city's historic heritage, and shows true dedication to upholding and protecting our landmarks law.

For too long, the Landmarks Preservation Commission has been more concerned with making life easier for developers and not concerned enough with maintaining and protecting our city's irreplaceable historic heritage. Our individual landmarks and historic districts contribute immeasurably to the economic, cultural, and spiritual life of the city, and should be strongly protected. The next chair of the Landmarks Preservation Commission must make this a priority, and have a track record which demonstrates that she or he is dedicated to these issues and will pursue them aggressively.

In recent years the Landmarks Preservation Commission has approved demolitions, alterations, and new construction in historic districts and changes to individual landmarks that would have been unimaginable in years past. It has denied protections to incredibly important historic sites, flying in the face of the intent and spirit of the landmarks law. Now is the time to reverse course and uphold the true meaning of our landmarks law, and protect and preserve our city's irreplaceable architectural and cultural heritage.
