Event Description
GW’s longstanding commitment to creating a greater world has led many of our graduates to dedicate themselves to public service through elected office, military service, and not-for-profit organizations. Join us for a discussion featuring three GW alumnae who are at the forefront of addressing the needs of our nation. The distinguished panelists will share how their GW experiences influenced their work, and what GW can do to prepare the next generation of leaders who embody the values of citizen leadership.
Roslyn Brock, GWSPH MS '89, is Founder and CEO of Equity Partnership Strategies, LLC and is the former Chief Advocacy Officer for Bon Secours Mercy Health System, Inc. She also worked for 10 years in Health Programs at the W. K. Kellogg Foundation. Brock is the Chairman Emeritus of the National Board of Directors for the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). She has been affiliated with the NAACP for more than 35 years, and in 2010 she made history when she was unanimously elected chairman, becoming the youngest person and fourth woman to hold the position. Brock serves on The George Washington University’s Board of Trustees.
Sen. Tammy Duckworth, ESIA MA ‘92, HON ‘17, is an Iraq War Veteran, Purple Heart recipient and former Assistant Secretary of the Department of Veterans Affairs. She was among the first Army women to fly combat missions during Operation Iraqi Freedom. Duckworth served in the Reserve Forces for 23 years before retiring from military service in 2014 at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. She was elected to the U.S. Senate in 2016 after representing Illinois’s Eighth Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives for two terms.
Lt. Gen. (ret) Nadja West, SMHS MD ‘88, HON '17, is the 44th Army Surgeon General and the former Commanding General of US Army Medical Command (USAMEDCOM). In 2015 West became the first African American woman 3-star General in the Army’s history, and is currently the highest-ranking woman to ever graduate from West Point. West completed residencies in Family Medicine and Dermatology, and has held various clinical, operational and leadership positions throughout her 30+ year career as a soldier. West managed an $11 billion budget; led an organization consisting of more than 130,000 healthcare professionals; and deployed medical formations around the globe, supporting over 4 million people.
Moderator: Frank Sesno served as director of the School of Media and Public Affairs at the George Washington University for 11 years. He is now the Director of Strategic Initiatives. He is an Emmy Award-winning journalist and creator of Planet Forward, a user-driven web and television project that highlights innovations in sustainability. He hosts and facilitates the Planet Forward Salon Series focusing on topics such as energy policy, green jobs and food production. He has moderated events for the American Association for the Advancement of Science, Bayer CropScience, Land O’Lakes Foundation and National Geographic, among others.
