Event Description
Join us in commemorating World Refugee Day, June 20, with a virtual 5K and a virtual screening of the documentary "Runner."
Virtual 5K Run/Walk
From June 14-20, we encourage participants to engage their communities in a socially distant run or walk leading up to World Refugee Day and shine their own light wherever they may be. You can choose to complete the 5k over the course of the week or in one day. Share your achievement by posting pictures or videos of yourself completing the 5k on social media, and don’t forget to use their hashtags! #SRR21 #RunForRefugees #SunsetRunForRefugees
Registration isn't required, though technical race shirts and bibs are available for purchase when you register. Registrations made through June 20th will receive their shirt and bib once the event concludes.
Co-founded four years ago by alumnus Adam Siple, CCAS BA '99, Sunset Run for Refugees partners with several organizations working to aid refugee populations around the globe, including Alight (formerly American Refugee Committee) and Save the Children. Your participation and donations help to shine a light on their important work to protect the most at-risk refugee communities around the globe, especially during this global pandemic.

Virtual Screening
"Runner" showcases one man’s journey from Refugee to Olympian. When he was only nine, Guor Mading Maker (known as Guor Marial) ran from capture in war-torn Sudan to eventually seek safety in the US. In his new life, Maker began running again, participating in high school track and field and eventually becoming a sensation qualifying for the 2012 Olympics. But because the newly formed South Sudan was not recognized by the International Olympics committee, Maker had to fight to compete independently, refusing to run for Sudan and taking a stand against its oppression. "Runner" depicts Maker’s difficult and triumphant journey from refugee to world-renowned athlete, told in intimate interviews with gorgeously animated flashbacks.
