Join us for a lively debate with two veteran foreign policy scholars -- former Elliott School dean Harry Harding and Professor Henry R. Nau -- as they discuss the future of the liberal world order amidst the rise of conservative nationalism. A networking reception precedes the discussion.

Harry Harding is University Professor and Professor of Public Policy and a Senior Fellow in the Miller Center of Public Affairs at the University of Virginia. He is also Adjunct Chair Professor in the College of Social Science at National Chengchi University in Taipei where he holds a Yushan Scholarship, the highest honor awarded by Taiwan’s Ministry of Education. Professor Harding served as the founding dean of UVA’s Frank Batten School of Leadership and Public Policy from 2009-2014. Before joining the Batten School, from 1995-2005, he was Dean of GW's Elliott School of International Affairs, and from 2005-2007, was Director of Research and Analysis at Eurasia Group, a political risk research and advisory firm based in New York. He has served on the boards of several educational and non-profit institutions as well as on the U.S.-China Joint Commission on Science and Technology and the U.S. Defense Policy Board. His major publications include Organizing China: The Problem of Bureaucracy, 1949-1966; China’s Second Revolution: Reform after Mao; A Fragile Relationship: the United States and China since 1972; and the chapter on the Cultural Revolution in the Cambridge History of China. He is currently working on a sequel to A Fragile Relationship under the working title A Fraught Relationship: The United States and China from Partners to Competitors.

Henry R. Nau is Professor of Political Science and International Affairs at the Elliott School of International Affairs, where he served as the first and, at that time, only Associate Dean of the newly founded Elliott School from 1988-1993. His latest book, Conservative Internationalism: Armed Diplomacy Under Jefferson, Polk, Truman, and Reagan, was published by Princeton University Press in 2013. Professor Nau spearheaded the U.S.-Japan-South Korea Legislative Exchange Program from 1989 to 2016. This Exchange convened semi-annual meetings among members of the U.S. Congress, Japanese Diet and South Korean National Assembly. For this effort, Professor Nau was awarded in 2016 with The Order of the Rising Sun, Neck Ribbon with Gold Rays by the Japanese government. Other principal publications include Perspectives on International Relations, 7th Edition (Sage/CQ Press 2020); At Home Abroad: Identity and Power in American Foreign Policy (Cornell 2002); and The Myth of America's Decline (Oxford 1990). From January 1981 to July 1983, Professor Nau served on President Reagan's National Security Council as senior staff member responsible for international economic affairs.
