Film studies lecturer David Wilt discusses the phenomenon of The Exorcist from its origin to the present day, with special emphasis upon its roots in the Washington, D.C., area.
About the Program
The Exorcist was a best-selling novel published in 1971, and the film version became a huge success in 1973. Together, these essentially created the "demonic possession" genre, which is still popular today. William Peter Blatty, author of the novel, was a student at Georgetown University in 1949 when he read a series of articles in D.C. newspapers about a young Maryland boy believed to be possessed. Twenty years later, Blatty drew upon this actual incident to write The Exorcist.
About David Wilt
David Wilt is a professional lecturer of film studies. He has taught courses at GW and the University of Maryland, where he specializes in cross-cultural cinema. Wilt is an accomplished academic and has published numerous articles and books on topics ranging from war films to Mexican horror cinema.
