Member Program: Origins of Girih Medallions in Carpet Design

Friday, November 13, 1 PM EST

In this virtual talk, Senior Curator Sumru Belger Krody will explore the origins of the girih medallion—an Islamic decorative art form of pointed stars—in carpet design. The details of when and where this style was introduced in carpets are debated by scholars. In her talk, Krody will help piece together the history of girih iconography through new research on a 13th-century Mamluk cover in The Textile Museum Collection.
