Inspiration: The Power of Music feat. Asian American singer-songwriters
Join fellow alumni for an evening of musical performances from singer-songwriters Alex Wong, Dr. Lily Bui, and Raye Zaragoza. In the past year we haven't always been able to experience live music, so we decided to bring the music to you. This is a unique opportunity to connect with musical artists from a variety of genres and backgrounds. A Q and A session will take place immediately after the performances, during which attendees can ask questions via chat.
This event is hosted by the GW Asian and Pacific Islander Alumni Network and is open to all GW alumni.
Featured Artists
Alex Wong is a Latin GRAMMY-nominated artist and producer. He has produced records with Delta Rae (Big Machine), Ari Hest (Columbia), Vienna Teng (Universal), Melissa Ferrick and Morgxn, among others. His music has been featured in movies The Last Song and The Lincoln Lawyer, TV shows True Blood, Ray Donovan, and One Tree Hill, and commercials for Google and Aquafina. Alex has toured all over the world, performing at festivals like Coachella, Outside Lands, and Corona Capital, in arenas in Mexico City and theaters in Europe and Japan, and on NPR’s Mountain Stage. Most recently, Alex released an EP called Kivalina with Americana artist Jesse Terry, inspired by stories of climate change and his second solo LP, The Elephant and The Seahorse and has recently written a two act musical called The Paper Raincoat.
Dr. Lily Bui (Lily Bee) is a Vietnamese-
American musician based in southern California. She has performed across the U.S., with notable venues including spaces such as the Ford Amphitheater in Los Angeles, the White House Department of the Interior, and the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. She received a PhD at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Urban Studies & Planning, specializing in disaster risk reduction. In past lives, she has produced science stories for public radio, organized citizen science projects, completed a full marathon; written/directed a musical; worked for a ghostwriter; been the coordinator of a hip-hop dance team; worked on Capitol Hill, and served in Americorps.
Raye Zaragoza is a galvanizing presence, a self-assured artist making music to fight for, represent, and celebrate those left too long outside the spotlight. Known for tenacious feminist anthems and fearless protest folk, her stage presence teems with determined morale. However, Zaragoza was not always the fortified woman of color who takes the stage today. Raye's most recent album, Woman In Color flares with the fierce spirit of Raye’s acclaimed debut while embracing the compelling pep of producer Tucker Martine's pop touch and elaborating upon her storied relation to identity. Through Woman In Color, Raye has written a collection of spirited canticles for herself, for womanhood, and for all the people who had to come together in such an event of divine coincidence that led to her existence.
