Hydrocephalus, an abnormal accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid in the brain, is a life-threatening condition that affects approximately 1 million Americans. There is no cure. Anyone can develop hydrocephalus at any time as a result of a traumatic brain injury, including premature babies, active duty service members, and veterans. Individuals can also be born with it, develop it as part of the aging process, or acquire it as a result of infections or brain tumors, among other causes. In fact, the overall population affected by hydrocephalus is growing. There are currently over 1,000,000 individuals living with hydrocephalus in the U.S. The only treatment for this condition is brain surgery, making it the number one reason for brain surgery in children. Hospitalization charges for pediatric hydrocephalus cases alone cost the U.S. health care system $2 billion dollars per year. In addition, adults living with hydrocephalus add exponentially to the nation's health care system costs, as well as costs related to reduced productivity in the workplace and, for older Americans, potentially unnecessary confinement to assisted living facilities and nursing homes. By joining the bipartisan Congressional Hydrocephalus Caucus, you can help raise awareness of this condition on Capitol Hill which will, in turn, lead to better public policy. Finding better treatments and possibly even a cure will greatly improve quality of life for those living with the condition, along with their families, caregivers, and medical teams.
