Welcome to Phyllis' HA WALK Page
Join me as I WALK to End Hydrocephalus for JORDAN and so many others! Most of you know Jordan's story - born a preemie at 31 weeks, she had a grade 3 intraventricular hemmorhage and developed hydrocephalus. She's had a total of 19 brain surgeries as a result of this condition, with 2 infections which kept her in the hospital for extended periods of time while they externalized her shunt (so cerebral spinal fluid could be drained externally). It was the summer of 2003 when she had 5 surgeries within 3 weeks, when she almost lost her battle, that spurred us into action and begin this WALK. She is my inspiration and during this journey I have been blessed to meet so many others on this crazy, life-altering road.
Hydrocephalus is a life altering, life threatening condition, caused by an abnormal accumulation of cerebral spinal fluid, resulting in pressure on the brain. The most common treatment for this condition is brain surgery to implant a medical device called a shunt, which has a 50% failure rate in children within the first two years. A shunt is not a cure as many patients endure multiple brain surgeries throughout their lifetime, some more than 100. Imagine life knowing that the next brain surgery lurks around the corner because your shunt could fail at any moment. No one should have to live like this. This is WHY I WALK and also why I need your support. Please donate and help me reach my goal. Your donation is greatly appreciated and will go far in helping us find a cure and improve the lives of people living with hydrocephalus.
Thank you!
