Why do I WALK?
I walk for my daughter!! Annabella was diagnosed with Hydrocephalus in utero. She had neurosurgery to have a VP shunt placed when she was one day old! She has had a total of 5 shunt related surgeries along with many other procedures and hospitalizations due to her condition. She also has epilepsy which is a common comorbidity of shunt treated hydrocephalus. There is forever the fear of another shunt malfunction leading to another surgery and more trauma for our sweet girl. Annabella has developmental delays due to her condition and she receives physical and occupational therapy to help her progress. She has done amazing things in her 9 years of living despite going through much more than most typical adults have! She continues to hurdle any difficulty life throws at her and amazes those around her every day.
Annabella brings joy to everyone around her! she is a social butterfly and will make you laugh with little effort. She loves spending time with her family and being the best sister! We hope that one day, medical advances are made that can cure hydrocephalus and allow for her to live a more stable lifestyle without the constant fear of needing yet another brain surgery. This is why we walk. For our sweet warrior princess, Annabella, and so many other people and families who live with the same struggles and fears as we do.
I believe that every person who joins the fight against hydrocephalus can have a lasting impact in the lives of every person diagnosed, today and in the future.
I believe that every dollar we raise for research will have a ripple effect and could be THE dollar that changes everything for a family affected by hydrocephalus.
As you may know, anyone at any age can develop hydrocephalus, a life-altering, life-threatening condition caused by an abnormal accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), resulting in pressure on the brain. The most common treatment for this condition is brain surgery to implant a medical device called a shunt. Sadly, a shunt is not a cure, as device failures are very common and lead to multiple brain surgeries over a patient’s lifetime, in some cases 100 or more.
Join our team and walk with us in support of our cause! Annabella loves meeting people and is always so thrilled to see so many people show up and walk on her team in support! Even if you can't participate in the walk, donations can be made by non walkers. Any amount helps and we are so very grateful!
