National Capital WALK to End Hydrocephalus

Amiyah's Angels

Welcome to Amiyah's Angels Team Page!

As many of you know, Amiyah was born with a rare medical condition called Vein of Galen Malformation. When she was a little over a month old, she went through two procedures, called an emobilization to treat her brain malformation. Her head size was slowly increasing prior to her emobilization, and when we thought that emobolization would help her head get smaller, unfortunately it did not. A few days following her emobilization, through MRI, the doctor's saw an infarct, which revealed that she had 2 mini strokes, and her brain was starting to get swollen, and needed immediate surgery. The doctor's placed a temporary  Ommaya reservoir to tap out fluid every day to relieve the pressure that was causing her brain to swell until they came to a decision to shunt her. Two days following her ommaya reservoir placement, Amiyah was diagnosed with Hydrocephalus secondary to Vein of Galen, and her neurosurgeons had inserted a VP Shunt. It’s been a little almost 9 years since her shunt has been in place, and she has been growing and achieving her milestones. She is very smart and super sassy! We have been blessed and so thankful every day that Amiyah has been doing so well, and we thank God every day for continuing to watch over her.

Please join our team and WALK with us to End Hydrocephalus! This event is very dear to our hearts as we are walking on behalf of our loved ones who are living with hydrocephalus and the constant fear that their shunt could fail at any moment. As you may know, hydrocephalus is a life altering, life threatening condition, caused by an abnormal accumulation of cerebral spinal fluid, resulting in pressure on the brain. The most common treatment for this condition is brain surgery to implant a medical device called a shunt, which has a 50% failure rate in children within the first two years. A shunt is not a cure as its consistent failures lead to multiple brain surgeries over a patient’s lifetime, in some cases 100 or more. This is unacceptable and this is WHY WE WALK.

Please join our team, donate and help us reach our goal. Your donation is greatly appreciated and will go far in helping us find a cure and improve the lives of people living with hydrocephalus.

Thank you, and much love to you all!!
