Team JAMStrong is Walking to End Hydrocephalus!
As some of you know, our beautiful daughter JAM has hydrocephalus, which she acquired after she suffered an Intraventricular Hemorrhage due to conditions surrounding her premature birth at 23 weeks, 1 day. Hydrocephalus is a life altering, life threatening condition, caused by an abnormal accumulation of cerebral spinal fluid, resulting in pressure on the brain. The most common treatment for this condition is brain surgery to implant a medical device called a shunt, which has a 50% failure rate in children within the first two years. A shunt is not a cure. As a result of her hydrocephalus, JAM has a shunt inserted in her brain that drains excess cerebral spinal fluid to her stomach. At three years old, she has already had 4 brain surgeries and while we hope and pray that she won't, it is very likely that she will need more surgeries during her life since shunts frequently fail. Each surgery has the potential to introduce more issues due to anesthesia and the potential for infections. Without more research and better technology, we know surgery number 5 will happen; we just don't know when. It's hard living with that dark cloud hanging over our heads each day and we want our daughter and other kids and adults like her to know a better future with better treatments and hopefully one day a cure for hydrocephalus.
I ask that you please join me and our team as we WALK to End Hydrocephalus or consider making a donation! Your time or donation is greatly appreciated and will go far in helping us find a cure and improve the lives of people living with hydrocephalus.
Thank you from the depths of my heart!
