Welcome to Tara's HA WALK Page
Please join me and Team G-Force as we walk to end hydrocephalus! This is the third year that Team G-Force is participating in the Walk to End Hydrocephalus in honor of our hydrowarrior, Gemma Grace! Over the past three years, we have had over 40 participants walk on our team and raised almost $15,000!
As you may know, hydrocephalus is a life altering, life threatening condition, caused by an abnormal accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid, resulting in pressure on the brain. The most common treatment for this condition is brain surgery to implant a medical device called a shunt, which has a 50% failure rate in children within the first two years.
A shunt is not a cure, as many patients endure multiple brain surgeries throughout their lifetime, some more than 100.
Born at 28-weeks, Gemma was born very tiny and very sick, and as a result suffered a grade 3/4 bilateral brain bleed. This brain injury ultimately led to the condition known as hydrocephalus, for which there is NO cure and something she will have to deal with her entire life. In fact, her first year of preschool, which is supposed to be an exciting, joyous period of a child and parent's life, was marred by the fact that Gemma experienced three shunt failures in a six month period and endured multiple surgeries and many days in the hospital --- all because of hydrocephalus and the faulty nature of the devices that manage this condition.
Imagine life knowing that the next brain surgery lurks around the corner because your shunt could fail at any moment. No one should have to live like this. This is WHY I WALK and also why I need your support. Please donate and help me reach my goal. Your donation is greatly appreciated and will go far in helping us find a cure and improve the lives of people living with hydrocephalus.
