Welcome to My WALK Fundraising Page! The SVOBODA Squad!
Why do I WALK?
I was diagnosed at age 14 with Hydrocephalus and received my first brain surgery at 14. Now, at age 26, I have had a total of 8 shunt-related surgeries! This has not stopped my life in becoming a nurse, traveling to Disney, plan a wedding, and making sure my bunnies have a fantastic life!
My hydrocephalus has shaped the person I have become today! It encouraged me to become a nurse, where I had brain surgery TWO WEEKS before I took my state boards to become a nurse (which I passed!). It has led me to help more people in my journey as a public health nurse, and sympathize what people are going through in a hospital setting. It also has left some pretty awesome scars, hairstyles, and stories!
I believe that every dollar we raise for research will have a ripple effect and could be THE dollar that changes everything for a family affected by hydrocephalus. I pray that this research will need to no more BS (brain surgery that is!)
As you may know, anyone at any age (I developed mine at 14!) can develop hydrocephalus, a life-altering, life-threatening condition caused by an abnormal accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), resulting in pressure on the brain. The most common treatment for this condition is brain surgery to implant a medical device called a shunt. Sadly, a shunt is not a cure, as device failures are very common and lead to multiple brain surgeries over a patient’s lifetime, in some cases 100 or more. Hopefully mine stops at 8!!
