Aurora and Joe's Fight to End Hydrocephalus
In case you didn't know it, my son Jacob has hydrocephalus. On 8/20/17, Jacob acquired bacterial meningitis. 4 days later, he suffered a brain bleed. He was 3 weeks old (still not even full term since he was born at 28 weeks). This blood in his head clogged up the channels within the brain that lets cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) flow and drain. This clogging lead to Jacob's hydrocephalus.
Hydrocephalus is a life altering, life threatening condition, caused by an abnormal accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid, resulting in pressure on the brain. The most common treatment for this condition is brain surgery to implant a medical device called a shunt, which has a 50% failure rate in children within the first two years.
JACOB HAS HAD 3 BRAIN SURGERIES (the initial shunt placement and 2 shunt failures). JACOB IS ONLY THREE YEARS OLD!
A shunt is not a cure, as many patients endure multiple brain surgeries throughout their lifetime, some more than 100. Imagine life knowing that the next brain surgery lurks around the corner because your shunt could fail at any moment. Everytime Jacob acts the least bit "off" we fear it's the shunt failing again. It's even hard to leave him for fear his shunt may fail and a caretaker won't recognize the signs. No one should have to live like this.
This is WHY WE WALK and also why we need your support. Please donate and help us reach our goal. Your donation is greatly appreciated and will go far in helping us find a cure and improve the lives of people living with hydrocephalus.
