Team David

Team David is back this year, and David is back as captain.

As many of you know, I live with a horrible condition called hydrocephalus. Thanks in large part to my team of doctors, in addition to my family, I am doing well and starting my second year at American University to receive my master's degree in special education, while also working at a special education school in DC for my student teaching experience. BUT there is NO CURE for hydrocephalus, which I continue to live with every day.

As you may know, hydrocephalus is a life-threatening condition caused by an abnormal accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid, resulting in pressure on the brain. It hits people of any age, from babyhood through adulthood (where it is linked to traumatic brain injury and infection) to old age (where it is commonly misdiagnosed as dementia). The most common treatment is brain surgery to implant a medical device called a shunt, which has a high failure rate (e.g. 50% in children in the first two years). I have had two brain surgeries (so far, knock on wood!), but many others with the condition have had over 20 or even over 100!

The WALK to End Hydrocephalus is very dear to my heart, as it raises funds for the Hydrocephalus Association's groundbreaking research and other programs. My family and I are WALKing for a world with NO MORE BRAIN SURGERIES for myself and all others living with hydrocephalus (over a million people in the US alone), present and future. Let's find a CURE!
