Urgent: Protect Maui Cats
(Valid street address is required - P.O. Boxes cannot be used*)
A pack of feral dogs has been running wild in the streets of Lahaina, Hawaii at night and killing feral cats, family pets, chickens, and other small dogs. The Maui Humane Society (MHS) claims they do not have the funding nor the staff to address after hours animal control issues. Since MHS is contracted with the County of Maui for animal control, this atrocious situation continues to plague the Maui cat rescue community. Without afterhours funding, these wild dog packs have essentially been allowed to continue their devastation. Concerned citizens have captured some dogs and tamed their pups, but MHS, in breach of their animal control contract, does nothing.
The feral cat population in Maui is heartbreaking, with far more cats than people willing to adopt them. There are only enough SNIP (spay/neuter coupons for feline and canine sterilizations) certificates available through February of 2015. Attempts to obtain emergency funding through the end of the present fiscal year on June 30, 2015 appear to be held up in the mayor's office. The Snip Fund grant is allocated by the County of Maui from taxes collected.
It is unjust and inhumane to allow these animals to be ruthlessly killed because authorities prevent a sustainable solution. Please send the letter below to Maui Mayor Alan Arakawa asking him to stop the cruel massacre and further overpopulation of feral cats.
