Save the Lives of Dogs & Farmed Animals With One Simple Policy Change

Did you know that cancer is an epidemic in dogs, with one in two dogs dying from the disease? The meat in pet foods most often comes from slaughterhouse offal that is unfit for human consumption. It is alarmingly high in toxic chemicals and dangerous carcinogens, with cancers often the deadly result. Los Angeles Animal Services is currently considering a proposal to provide plant-based diets for dogs while they're staying in the city shelters. Supporters note that dogs are omnivores, and vegan diets eliminate many health problems in dogs. We must act now on this opportunity to help dogs, save farmed animals, and protect the environment.

Carcinogens such as arsenic, mercury, and other heavy metals, as well as persistent organic pollutants such as dioxins, DDT, PCBs, and other toxic chemicals, are highly concentrated in animal tissue due to bioaccumulation. Evidence suggests that harmful ingredients in commercially available meat-based dog foods can cause an increase in cancers, skin allergies, and other degenerative diseases in companion dogs.

Dogs are omnivores and can thrive on nutritionally complete plant-based diets. They have more genes to digest carbohydrates than their wolf ancestors. Many dogs also suffer from allergies to meat proteins, particularly those found in chickens and cows. Plant-based diets can provide great relief to these dogs in particular.

Veterinarians, dog trainers, animal rescuers, veterinary technicians, and many others support the proposal. Due to lack of awareness and fear of change, opponents are urging the Mayor's office and Los Angeles Animal Services Board of Commissioners to reject the proposal.

We can't lose this historic opportunity to improve the lives of dogs and to reduce the cruel, unnecessary, and environmentally disastrous slaughter of farmed animals. Let's fight to pass this groundbreaking proposal in solidarity with local activists!
