Stop the SAVES Act Before It Kills Endangered Animals

The Endangered Species Act has dramatically reduced species extinctions since it was enacted in 1973, but it could soon become extinct. Polar bears, pandas, chimpanzees, elephants, turtles, tigers, parrots and even orchids will lose protections that are essential to their survival if a dangerous new bill is passed. Deceptive legislation has been introduced called "Saving America's Endangered Species Act" commonly known as the SAVES Act. It aims to remove protections for all threatened and endangered species who are not native to the U.S. Please contact your representative in Congress urgently to stop the SAVES Act from killing off endangered species.

The SAVES Act is making its way through the House of Representatives as HR 2603 right now, and would remove regulatory reporting for non-native captive endangered wildlife in U.S. zoos, roadside attractions, private possession and circuses. Elephants, tigers, parrots orchids and many other species would lose protections essential to their survival.

The SAVES Act would also diminish U.S. commitments to fight wildlife trafficking under CITES, the Convention on International Trade of Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora, a treaty signed by 183 countries today protecting 35,000 species of plants and animals. Gains made saving endangered tropical birds, cacti, tigers and elephants will be lost, while programs to end the trade in rhino horn and elephant ivory will lose their effectiveness. The SAVES Act has already cleared a committee in the House of Representatives, so there's no time to spare.

What YOU Can Do — TODAY:

Endangered animals, plants, and entire ecosystems need you to contact your representative in the House of Representatives right now. You do not need to be a registered voter, just a constituent of your representative.

1) CALL your legislators.

Enter your zip code at link below, then click on the "Federal" tab to find out who your district legislator is in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Use the number to call your representative, and politely say something like the following:

"As your constituent, I urge you to stop HR 2603, "Saving America's Endangered Species Act" from coming to the House floor for a vote. This bill radically weakens the Endangered Species Act, and does not save it. It would end protections of all nonnative species under the Endangered Species Act and would harm our international leadership role in the fight to stop illegal wildlife trafficking.

We must not turn our backs on endangered elephants, cheetahs, rhinos, tigers, as well as cacti and orchids that face extinction without the current Endangered Species Act. Please commit to keeping the Endangered Species Act strong and effective."

2) Follow up your call with an email to your representative by filling in the required fields and submitting our letter.
