In July, Republicans in Congress introduced a series of bills intended to gut the Endangered Species Act (ESA). These bills are the latest of over 300 legislative attacks directed at the ESA since 2011. These legislative attacks are coming at a time when, unfortunately, the Interior Department itself is proposing drastic changes to the ESA, including provisions that would make developing of infrastructure such as pipelines easier in key wildlife habitat. We can't let this happen!
Among the most recent pieces of legislation introduced is the PETITION Act of 2018 (H.R. 6355), which would allow the Fish and Wildlife Service to declare a "petition backlog" and indefinitely suspend any decision on listing proposed species. Another proposed bill, the EMPOWERS Act of 2018 (H.R. 6345), would give state and county officials unprecedented authority over listing a species as endangered and greatly increase the requirements for listing.
The Endangered Species Act was signed into law in 1973 with bipartisan support. It has led the way for the recovery and success of iconic American wild animals such as bald eagles, grizzly bears, and gray wolves, as well as lesser-known species such as the black-footed ferret. If the current attacks on the ESA succeed, we will be guaranteed an ecologically impoverished future. The ESA is crucial for our nation's wildlife and the future of our natural heritage; speak up now to protect it!
