Solitary Elephant Asha Still Waiting for "Responsible" Agencies to Act on Her Behalf

The sordid situation for Asha, the solitary elephant suffering at Natural Bridge Zoo in Rockbridge County, Virginia, has persisted despite our best attempts to shut down this horrific roadside atrocity and get Asha released to a sanctuary. We recently filed a civil and criminal complaint on Asha's behalf by partnering with the legal team at the Animal Defense Partnership and a group of other nonprofit organizations. Now we ask for you to speak up for Asha again — before her whole life is wasted in misery!

We filed a complaint against Natural Bridge Zoo and its owner, Karl Mogensen, for abuse and neglect of Asha. We asked Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries (DGIF) and the USDA to revoke Mogensen's exhibitor permit immediately, seize Asha, and place her in an accredited elephant sanctuary. Mogensen has a long and ugly history of animal abuse and neglect at the Zoo, which is a matter of public record, and the Natural Bridge Zoo has been on our annual Ten Worst Zoos for Elephants list every year since it landed on the #1 worst zoo slot in 2014.

Each day that Virginia's DGIF permits Asha to suffer and be harmed by conditions caused by Mogensen at his Natural Bridge Zoo is another day that Asha is refused relief by the State of Virginia and its Department of Game and Inland Fisheries.

What YOU Can Do — TODAY:

Tell the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries and the USDA that their inaction is unacceptable when it comes to this suffering solitary elephant.

1) Call: (804) 367-1000

Robert W. Duncan - Executive Director
Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries (DGIF)

Politely say: "Virginia's DGIF has the evidence and the authority to take action to relieve elephant Asha's suffering at Natural Bridge Zoo. Just because the USDA has failed in its duty to remove Asha, does not excuse DGIF from fulfilling its duties in protecting her as proscribed by Virginia Code. I ask that DGIF no longer shirk its responsibility for this solitary suffering elephant."

2) Send our letter to Robert Duncan, Executive Director of Virginia's DGIF and Robert Gibbens Director of Animal Welfare Operations of the USDA by filling out the fields on this page.
