The world is watching in horror as fires — set intentionally by ranchers — are burning the Amazon rainforest at a staggering, record-breaking pace. Brazilian President Bolsonaro encourages the mass clearing of the environmentally-vital ecosystem to make room for the exploitative practice of cattle ranching, while the survival of millions of animals and the global climate is at stake. Please urge the Brazilian National Congress to stop the Amazon fires before it is too late!
The Amazon rainforest spans 2.1 million square miles in South America which produces 20% of the world's oxygen. This vast, biologically diverse landscape is home to more animal and plant species than any other ecosystem on earth and significantly impacts weather and precipitation patterns occurring around the world.
Nearly 2/3 of the Amazon rainforest is located in Brazil which is currently burning to the ground at an unprecedented rate. These fires are intentionally—and illegally—set by cattle ranchers to clear land for cattle to graze before they are brutally slaughtered and their flesh is exported around the world. These fires are encouraged by Brazil's President, Jair Bolsonaro, who recklessly disregards the devastating, wide-spread environmental impacts of clearing the Amazon rainforest to produce inexpensive meat.
Wild animals in the Amazon are not adapted to withstand wildfire, which leaves them with very few options to survive. Although fires naturally occur, extensive burning is not common in the tropical climate due to high levels of rainfall. If animals cannot burrow underground or find a body of water to hide in, they die from flames, heat, and smoke inhalation. As the intentionally set fires ravage the Amazon, jaguars, macaws, pygmy three-toed sloths, black spider monkeys, poison dart frogs, and members of thousands of other species are experiencing terror and dying as their home is burned to the ground to meet our ever-expanding human population's desire for cheap beef.
Since President Bolsonaro took office on Jan 1, 2019, more than 74,000 fires have burned throughout the Brazilian Amazon, marking an 85% increase in the number of fires from last year while killing countless animals in the process.
Bolsonaro's efforts to facilitate the production and slaughter of cows for human consumption is causing millions of animals to die while destabilizing the global climate. Please help save animals and the planet by choosing plant-based options, and urge the leaders of the Brazilian National Congress to stop burning the Amazon rainforest!
