Two major veterinary associations issued a joint policy endorsing horrific surgical procedures and unlimited sale (slaughter) of America's wild horses and burros. We must act now to stop the cruel and unnecessary torture and killing of innocent animals under this new policy advisement!
The American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP) and the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) have adopted a policy on the "Management of Bureau of Land Management Wild Horses and Burros" which shortsightedly recommends sterilization and sale to slaughter. The preferred sterilization method of the Bureau of Land Management is a barbaric, reckless procedure in which the ovaries of wild mares are ripped out with a metal rod and chain. Sale to slaughter allows the mass killing of these iconic animals.
For veterinarians who have pledged to protect animal welfare and prevent animal suffering, this policy is unconscionable and a blatant affront to the profession. Whether you are the guardian of horses, other animals, or simply want to save wild horses and burros from torturous procedures and death, please contact the AAEP and the AVMA today!
1. Call the AAEP office (800) 443-0177 and the AVMA office (800) 248-2862.
You may wish to say:
Your organization's adopted policy on the "Management of Bureau of Land Management Wild Horses and Burros" includes endorsements that do not uphold your Veterinarian's Oath to protect animal welfare and prevent animal suffering. Your organization have been misled to believe that sterilization and slaughter are necessary. There are better workable solutions!
2. Secondly, please respectfully let your personal veterinarian know how misguided the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) plans for wild horses and burros are when it comes to upholding the oath to protect animals and prevent their suffering.
3. Please follow-up up with an email (with your personal touch) to AAEP and AVMA by filling out the form on this page.
