Help Save Horses From Slaughter
U.S. residents only - use the form at the bottom of this page to send a fax to your U.S. Senators and Representative
It is estimated that more than 100,000 horses from the U.S. are shipped to slaughterhouses in Canada and Mexico each year. In 2011, President Obama signed a bill stripped of language which had
previously defunded inspections at horse slaughterhouses, which opened
the door once again to legal horse slaughter in the U.S. Now, some
states are moving forward to establish slaughterhouses. If any of these
are approved, it will mark the first slaughter of horses for human
consumption in the U.S. since 2007. Time is running out.
In response to public outrage, some in Congress are finally acting to safeguard horses from ending up in slaughterhouses, but they need to see that you support their efforts. U.S. Sens. Mary Landrieu (D-La.), Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), and Reps. Patrick Meehan (R-Pa.) and Jan Schakowsky (D-Ill.), recently introduced the Safeguard American Food Exports (SAFE) Act (S. 541/H.R. 1094). The Act would ban horse slaughter in the U.S., as well as banning the export of horses to other countries to be slaughtered for human consumption.
It is important that your legislators hear from you directly, so they
know that their constituents support the humane treatment of horses.
